Communications Assistant – The Office of Congresswoman Cherfilus-McCormick, a Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee’s (HFAC) Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee and Returning Member of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee (HVAC) seeks a Communications Assistant to support the Member Office’s communications efforts.
The ideal candidate is a skilled graphic designer, listener and communicator, detail-oriented and organized, responsive and accessible, a creative problem solver, and self-motivated. They are proactive and have a strong proficiency in crafting digital content, particularly strong graphic design experience. They are social media savvy and can spot opportunities for engaging with content creators. They have a background in planning digital events.
Daily tasks include creating content for the Member’s social media platforms; compiling daily press clips; updating and managing the website; developing graphics; editing video content; drafting e-newsletters; drafting talking points and backgrounders; and other administrative tasks.
This position reports to the Communications Director.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Create graphics for digital mediums that effectively communicate an idea or policy clearly
• Managing digital platforms, producing videos, photos, and other creative content
• Analyzing digital media performance
• Assist with updating the website
• Manage livestreaming, photography, and videography at DC-based events
• Developing and updating media lists
• Drafting a wide range of written materials including speeches, press releases, talking points, text messages, newsletters, and social media posts
• Managing and distributing daily clips and media mentions
• Assisting with the day-to-day operation of the communications shop
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
• Must possess a bachelor’s degree. Congressional experience, including internships, is preferred. A minimum of 3 years of related experience or training in political communications, public relations, or graphic design is preferred.

Salary is commensurate with experience.
