Summary

This position is located within the Office of the Legal Adviser, Law Enforcement and Intelligence (L/LEI). The Office is responsible for both legal and policy oversight of the Department of State’s central role in matters involving international extradition of individuals in criminal cases, including drafting, negotiating, and interpreting relevant international agreements.



Duties

Serves as the action officer and is the initial point of contact for extradition requests, both to and from the United States, and ensures effective communication of policy and guidance regarding extradition to stakeholders.

Drafts and sends cables to foreign service posts instructing them to request extradition and provides guidance on the presentation of requests.

Provides both operational and conceptual orientation and background to colleagues, posts, desk officers, foreign diplomats, and interagency colleagues. Drafts or reviews talking points, press releases, and congressional reports on extradition.

Analyzes and develops foreign policy within the assigned portfolio, offers insight into foreign affairs concerning extradition matters, and, when requested, offers recommendations on effective U.S. legal and policy choices in dealing with them.

Coordinates with foreign embassies on the presentation of extradition requests and maintains contacts at U.S. foreign service posts and foreign embassies.
