A senior Northern Virginia Democratic state senator seeks an experienced professional to serve as Chief of Staff, a role focused on supporting the Senator’s legislative priorities, overseeing office communications, managing office operations and a small team of additional staff, and implementing political strategy. Varied workload and uniquely valuable experience providing opportunities to engage directly in the lawmaking process.  

Responsibilities include:

●      Researching and drafting legislation in consultation with stakeholders and state agencies.

●      Reviewing legislation coming before the Senator during the annual fast paced legislative session, and potentially supporting committee and commission operations in planning, and setting agendas. 

●      Researching and drafting remarks, policy briefs, constituent correspondence, and op-eds for local and regional publications. 

●      Assisting legislative aide and interns in office organization, project management, and reviewing and editing staff’s projects and daily tasks. 

●      Occasionally staffing the Senator at community functions. 

●      Managing social media strategy and public facing political communications such as direct mail, text programs, and digital advertising. 

●      Managing donor database, prospecting new donors, and executing fundraising strategies, including planning and orchestrating in-person fundraisers, direct mail appeals, call time, and assisting the office’s treasurer in compliance reporting. 

 

Job Requirements:

●      Strong written communication skills.

●      Extreme attention to detail, strong organizational skills.

●      Ability to self-manage and motivate and proven project management skills.

●      Proficiency with Google GSuite & MS Office.

●      Strong interpersonal skills and ethical reasoning. 

●      Familiarity with NGP & VAN (preferred).

●      Experience in, and familiarity with Virginia state government/politics (strongly preferred).

 



 

Job Duration: Indefinite

 

Required Travel: to Richmond, during the legislative session, 6-8 weeks per year with occasional additional travel within the state for political and legislative events. Job requires occasionally attending community and legislative functions on nights, weekends, and federal holidays. 

 

Minimum Education: BA/BS/Undergraduate

 

Minimum Experience: 2-3 yrs

 

Salary: Up to $71,000 and a generous benefits package provided by the Commonwealth.  Opportunity to earn additional stipend for separate fundraising and political work.
