Support the work of the State Impact Center in addressing the climate crisis and environmental injustice as the Operations Associate. This is a new position at the Center that was designed to support the Center’s current work and an expanded fellowship program.
The position offers operational responsibilities and a role on the operations and communications team, with growth potential. The Operations Associate will report to the Associate Director for Operations and Budget. The Center is passionate about building and sustaining an inclusive and equitable working environment for our staff. We offer a generous benefits package through NYU, which includes tuition remission and retirement benefits. Salary: $60,000-65,000.
About the Center
The State Impact Center is a nonpartisan academic think tank based at NYU School of Law. The Center is dedicated to working towards a healthy and safe environment, guided by inclusive and equitable principles. To accomplish this, the Center studies and supports the work of state attorneys general and other state-level agencies in defending, enforcing, and promoting strong laws and policies in the areas of climate, environmental justice, environmental protection, and clean energy. We undertake academic research, hold workshops, and issue special reports that advance legal and policy analysis. We are a small, collaborative team, and value each person’s insights and contributions.

Who We Are Looking For
The State Impact Center is looking for an Operations Associate to begin in winter 2024. The Operations Associate will play a crucial role in the day-to-day operations of the State Impact Center and our strategic planning as we run and expand our programming. The Operations Associate will be responsible for providing strategic and administrative support to the Executive Director, supporting fund development work, and innovating on internal policies and systems. The Operations Associate will work closely with the Executive Director and Associate Director for Operations and Budget on all these issues, including thinking critically about the State Impact Center’s policies and procedures and implementing improvements to our practices as we strive to build an inclusive workplace and promote belonging. The State Impact Center values each team member’s contributions, and the Operations Associate may also be involved in work including tracking organizational metrics, drafting material, and planning events.

Core Responsibilities:
- Executive Assistance:
- Manage the Executive Director’s calendar, including scheduling meetings and making travel arrangements. Coordinate any post-meeting action items or follow-ups with internal staff.
- Support the Executive Director in managing organizational priorities and incoming requests.
- Draft correspondence on behalf of the Executive Director as needed.
- Perform physical and digital organizational tasks for the Executive Director.
- Prepare and submit monthly expense reports on behalf of the Executive Director.
- Operations & Administrative Work:
- Support the development and implementation of organizational structures and associated policies, promoting inclusivity and belonging.
- Coordinate personnel processes for State Impact Center staff and interns, including hiring and onboarding, as well as biannual performance evaluations.
- Support relationships with outside entities and partners to work on events and share resources; improve and manage a relationship database for use by every staff member.
- Support the planning and logistical coordination of events, especially internal trainings and team-building events.
- Schedule meetings and serve as the staff point of contact for the State Impact Center’s Advisory Council.
- Fund Development:
- Research and identify potential grant opportunities.
- Draft narrative reports and proposals, working closely with the Associate Director for Operations and Budget and the Executive Director.
- Assist with tracking of strategic organizational metrics, working closely with the Communications Manager.
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Education & Experience: bachelor’s degree and 2+ years of experience, ideally in nonprofits,
- academia, or public sector (we include summer or other internships as experience).
- Organization: excellent organizational skills and ability to proactively manage many
- simultaneous issues, multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
- Communication: high level of attention to detail; ability to summarize and present material in
- writing and verbally; comfort with Microsoft and Google suite products for writing,
- spreadsheets, and presentations.
- Collaborative: ability to work well within a team and support relationships with outside
- partners.
