ABOUT THE DC PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL BOARD (DC PCSB)

Every day, we’re doing the work to ensure that 44,000+ public charter school students, families, and communities receive a quality education that makes them feel valued and prepared for lifelong learning, fulfilling careers, and economic security. DC PCSB is an independent agency of the District of Columbia government. Our mission, vision, values, and work are rooted in the principles of REDI (Race, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion).

ABOUT THE ROLE

Public charter school board governance is a powerful indicator of student success. As fiduciaries of the charter school, each of our 69 governing boards is responsible for setting the school’s vision, making key operational decisions, and managing public funds. By upholding standards for compliance and quality, DC PCSB can support boards in providing an excellent education to all students. This is where you come in.

You are one we trust to lead our governance oversight. You are responsible for building relationships with school boards, evaluating our existing practices, and proposing solutions that keep students at the forefront. Governance oversight is part of DC PCSB’s broader compliance work. As a member of Sector Planning and Compliance, you will also audit high school transcripts to certify students have met their graduation requirements, review school-submitted compliance documents for accuracy and timeliness, and support other team initiatives.

Core Responsibilities

  • Strengthen DC PCSB’s governance oversight by evaluating existing practices, engaging stakeholders, and developing a framework which promotes board compliance and quality.
  • Own and update DC PCSB’s existing Board of Trustees Compliance Policy.
  • Lead the quarterly review of school board meeting minutes by assigning readers, summarizing their notes, and sharing key information with DC PCSB leadership.
  • Monitor school boards’ compliance with legal and charter requirements like member composition and bylaw adherence.
  • Foster relationships with school board members through attending board meetings and establishing patterns of communication.
  • Participate heavily in the graduation transcript audit process, including coordinating logistics and authoring executive summaries.
  • Review annual compliance submissions such as student/family policies, annual reports, and certificates of occupancy.
  • Support other team and department initiatives like pre-opening site and residential program visits, charter application reviews, and school closures.

Competencies and Qualifications

  • Detailed-oriented and highly organized project management: creates systems to plan ahead, monitor progress, and juggle multiple priorities.
  • Creative problem-solving: diagnoses problems, identifies opportunities, and proposes solutions that produce positive change.
  • Trustworthy relationship builder: develops authentic relationships and leads tough conversations across lines of difference.
  • At least four years of professional experience.
  • Teaching or other school-based experience is preferred.
  • Must express comfort and willingness to discuss, learn, and implement REDI framework—using it to build relationships, navigate conversations, and support the mission, vision, and values of DC PCSB.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary is competitive and commensurate with prior experience in a similar role. DC PCSB offers a comprehensive benefits plan covering 100% of the employee’s insurance premium. As an employee of a government agency, you might be eligible for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program. Please visit the studentaid.gov website for eligibility details and requirements.

In connection with our REDI commitments, and to limit pay inequities within our organization, there is a non-negotiation policy built within our compensation system. The salary for this role is $70,000 – $84,900.

DC PCSB is an equal opportunity employer committed to building a culturally diverse staff. We strive to foster an environment where everyone feels included. We believe that when people bring their unique identities, backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences to our community, we can truly achieve excellence in our work.
