The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) is seeking an Editorial Content Specialist. The Editorial Content Specialist serves as managing editor of IDSA’s e-newsletter, IDSA News, and executes other written communications across the organization. The role supports the Director of Content Strategy in executing an integrated content strategy across the Society, including developing and maintaining an organizational editorial calendar coordinating relevant themes and topics. The incumbent will write, copyedit and proof content across IDSA’s integrated content channels — including newsletter articles, blog posts, email copy, web content, feature stories, opinion pieces, statements, speeches and other communications — to maintain style and brand consistency.

Qualifications

Programmatic Oversight:

  • Serves as managing editor of IDSA News. Manages, writes, edits and oversees production and distribution of the newsletter and other member communications in conjunction with the Director of Content Strategy.
  • Explores new formats to make optimal use of evolving technologies for providing information tailored to member preferences based on data and analytics.

Expertise Application:

  • Develops editorial content to demonstrate the value of the infectious diseases profession and support IDSA’s strategic priorities and workstreams, such as the ID workforce strategy, the ID physician compensation initiative and “a seat at the table” advocacy campaigns.
  • Creates tailored content for targeted member audiences, such as fellows in training, clinicians in private practice, ID pharmacists or advanced practice practitioners, in support of IDSA’s membership strategy for recruiting and retaining members and clearly communicating IDSA’s brand.

Analysis and Problem-Solving:

  • Establishes, manages and maintains an editorial content calendar to coordinate topics across the organization, staying abreast of current trends, IDSA programs and activities, relevant editorial themes and story angles.

Project Management and Support:

  • Assists with planning, coordinating, writing, copyediting and proofreading HIVMA’s newsletter, IDSA’s Advocacy Bulletin and other member communications, ensuring that content is engaging and reflects IDSA’s brand and editorial style.

Role-Specific Duties:

  • Reviews and edits content for IDSA, HIVMA, the IDSA Foundation and IDWeek, including IDWeek Daily News, ensuring content is engaging, reflective of IDSA’s brand and editorial style, and developed according to SEO best practices.
  • Supports IDSA members with writing and/or writes posts for the Science Speaks blog to expand the number of member voices and the topics covered to establish and maintain a regular posting schedule.
  • Writes, develops, manages and produces other communications vehicles directed to members and the public, including, but not limited to, emails, web content, promotional publications, brochures, speeches, talking points and news releases, as needed, ensuring consistency with IDSA editorial style and brand.
  • Performs duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or a related field; relevant experience can be submitted
  • At least 3 years of relevant work experience
  • Experience with a nonprofit member association strongly preferred
  • Experience with infectious diseases and/or HIV preferred

Competencies: Knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Superb news judgement.
  • Superior writing and grammar skills with strong knowledge of the Associated Press Stylebook and demonstrable experience writing and editing according to AP style.
  • Demonstrated creativity.
  • A significant understanding of digital platforms as well as new and emerging communications technologies.
  • Familiarity with SEO strategies.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain integrity, clarity and accuracy across various kinds of materials while writing or editing.

Travel Requirements:

  • IDWeek – October (typically)
  • Annual All-Staff Retreat – June
  • End-of-Year Celebration – December

Physical Demands:

  • This position requires sitting and/or standing at a desk, prolonged sitting and bending and lifting during travel, as well as extensive sitting, standing, walking and lifting during IDWeek.
  • This role also requires access to stable internet and the ability to spend several hours on the computer.
