We fight poverty through comprehensive social services and by treating each client with compassion, integrity, and respect. Our programs are staffed by experts who help over 325,000 clients each year and advocate on behalf of all needy New Yorkers. Our services include 100% affordable housing at 21 locations, family violence services, Holocaust survivor assistance, geriatric social work, crisis intervention and the largest free kosher food distribution program in the world. Our network of 101 food pantries, affordable housing sites, and affiliated JCCs provide services directly in neighborhoods across New York City.

Position Summary:

The Managing Director, Social Services will provide oversight, supervision, and direction to our social services units including Family Violence, Crisis Intervention, Holocaust & Geriatrics Services, and Benefits Access. The Managing Director will work with the directors of each of these units to ensure that services are being delivered efficiently and effectively and that their programs advance the strategic mission of the agency. The Managing Director will monitor and help the program directors meet grant deliverables as well as budgetary and other programmatic requirements. They will lead the strategic initiatives that cut across Social Services departments, own relevant funder relationships, and serve as a thought partner to all. The Managing Director will report to the Chief Operating Officer and will work with senior leadership to develop mission driven program expansion and innovation as well as strategic direction for the organization.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and guide program directors to ensure effective and efficient service delivery.
  • Establish and advance overall vision and direction of social services programming.
  • Monitor and assure grant/contract compliance and program deliverables are met.
  • Assure reports are accurate, well written, and submitted on time.
  • Supervise the Data department to ensure program data is adequately tracked and stored.
  • Work with senior leadership to maintain, expand, and create mission driven services.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the organization’s strategic vision.
  • Arrange professional development and training opportunities for Social Services staff.
  • Develop program budgets and contract deliverables with the Fiscal department.
  • Own relationships with external partners such as social service agencies, elected officials’ constituent services liaisons, and funders.
  • Additional responsibilities as may be required.

Skill and Education:

  • BA or BS (required)
  • Graduate degree – MSW, MPA, MPH, or comparable (preferred)
  • SIFI eligible (preferred)
  • 5-10 years of experience in social service programming, particularly in one of the program areas of Met Council
  • 5-10 years in a supervisory role
  • Strong working knowledge of the social services landscape in NYC, and/or public benefits and non-public programs to assist the needy
  • Fluent in English; additional languages helpful
  • Computer savvy with strong working knowledge of MS Office – especially Excel and Word - and other software programs
  • Knowledge of client data tracking systems such as Awards and Salesforce

Compensation: $133,000 to $155,000 per year.
