Summary  

The National Foreign Trade Council (NFTC) seeks a Policy Associate to advance our international tax and supply chain policy work and support events, projects, and communications. This full-time position based in Washington, DC offers opportunities to develop skills and potential for career advancement in a hybrid work environment (3 days per week in-office). You will work closely with a small team of highly-motivated policy professionals and innovative member companies that span diverse industries to support public policies that advance global commerce. 


About the National Foreign Trade Council

The NFTC is a recognized leader in advancing the interests of U.S. companies in international commerce. For over 100 years, we have provided our members with expertise, advocacy, and access to navigate the challenges of the global economy. Today, NFTC is a thought leader and key interlocutor in areas ranging from international trade agreements and tax treaties to tariffs, supply chain conditions globally, digital trade policies and sanctions.


We serve as a resource and advocate for our members’ interests with the U.S. Executive Branch and Congress and globally through organizations including the WTO, OECD, and United Nations. We engage the media, think tanks and other interest groups on the role of international trade and tax policies in contributing to U.S. economic growth and job creation. We conduct regular meetings, briefings, and in-depth analysis and serve as a nimble and effective forum for companies to tackle critical and complex issues together.

 

The NFTC maintains an affiliated, independent 501(c)(3) educational organization, the NFTC Foundation. The NFTC Foundation houses the Global Innovation Forum, an educational effort to engage a global network of small businesses, nonprofit leaders and government officials to explore the role of trade policies and programs in fostering resilience and inclusive growth.

 

What You Will Do

The Policy Associate will support NFTC’s small team of senior staff across a range of policy and administrative functions: 

  • Conduct research and gather information on international tax and supply chain issues and at times on trade, small business, and national security policy issues to support NFTC’s policy work; 
  • Assist in drafting, editing, cite-checking, and submitting/distributing comment letters, briefing memos, policy papers, and one-pagers; help to coordinate member input; monitor relevant government and international organization websites for news and opportunities to comment.
  • Participate in and document NFTC’s meetings and activities; organize and attend meetings with Administration officials, Congressional offices, embassy personnel, press, and other stakeholders; attend and report on external events to support NFTC’s profile in DC’s tax, trade and national security policy communities. 
  • Participate in periodic NFTC events and policy conferences; assist with planning and logistics and work with senior staff on programming, outreach, execution, and follow-up as needed. 
  • Contribute to NFTC’s communications and membership functions by researching, drafting and editing content for NFTC’s websites, press releases, and social media accounts; assist with outreach to media, members and prospects. 
  • Assist the Senior Director for Operations in managing NFTC’s contacts, distribution lists, and databases.
  • This position may require periodic travel. 
  • Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to undertake research projects that support writing policy briefs, one-pagers, and position documents.
  • Exceptional time-management and organizational skills, attention to detail, and an ability to manage, prioritize and execute multiple assignments with short timelines.
  • A proven ability to collaborate with teammates and diverse business, government and non-profit stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office products.
  • An undergraduate or graduate degree in policy, business, economics, law, international relations, or a related discipline.
  • Applicants must possess at least one year of professional experience related to tax, supply chain, trade, or related policy issues to qualify for consideration.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience working on tax, supply chain, trade, or related policy issues.
  • Prior experience coordinating public events and private meetings.
  • Experience with publishing and design software (e.g. Adobe InDesign/Illustrator, Canva), email marketing, WordPress, and social media tools.

 

Salary and Benefits

NFTC offers a supportive and collaborative environment to develop your skills and advance your career. The base salary range for this position is between $55,000 - $75,000 depending on a candidate’s unique experience, skill set and qualifications. Work Schedule

NFTC follows a hybrid work schedule. The person in this role will be expected to be physically present in the Washington, DC office a minimum of 3 days per week and as needed to fulfill their obligations and support our members and team.
