COMPANY DESCRIPTION  The Los Angeles Brotherhood Crusade, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1968, enriches the lives of South Angeles residents through education, social services, and empowerment opportunities. We aim to eliminate disparities and create a safe, inclusive community with equitable access to services. Our mission is to remove barriers, foster growth, promote health and safety, and improve quality of life for low-income individuals, seniors, and youth through various programs.  


SUMMARY OF POSITION  The Director of People and Culture collaborates closely with the leadership team to advise on HR functions, talent management and staff retention. The Director of People and Culture will drive the organization's people agenda, aligning it with the mission while ensuring compliance with labor laws as the organization grows. This role focuses on fostering an employee-oriented, high-performance culture in line with Brotherhood Crusade's values of integrity, compassion, accountability, diversity, and commitment. We are an organization of 43 fte and 10 part time staff, looking to grow by 10-12 in the near future. This is a full time, 40 hours per week position in the Brotherhood Crusade offices.


This position reports to the Executive Vice President. In the current organizational structure, this is a one person department that we hope to grow over time.


Opportunities for Impact

Talent Acquisition

  • Develop and implement an innovative talent acquisition vision, establishing the best recruitment practices and building a pipeline of talent for future roles.
  • Evaluate and enhance the full recruiting process, serving as an advisor to ensure recruitment of diverse and exceptional talent.
  • Ensure HR infrastructure, implement best practices, ensure compliance, and lead initiatives in recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • With the help of Senior Management help shape new onboarding and employee engagement processes
  • You are the face of the organization to candidates. You are responsible for moving candidates through the acquisition process, interviewing candidates and helping hiring managers make decisions.

Culture & People

  • Craft and launch an integrated culture and engagement strategy that transforms the workplace, aligns all staff with the vision and strategic direction of the organization, and will be instrumental in transforming Brotherhood Crusade into a high-performing successful workplace deeply rooted in our values and purpose.
  • Manage employee communication and feedback through avenues such as staff meetings, employee surveys, one-on-one meetings, etc.
  • Work collaboratively with senior leadership and department directors across the organization to implement and integrate culture initiatives into everyday operations.
  • Provide strategic counsel, guidance, and innovative tools to managers, empowering them with best communication practices that elevate productivity and performance.
  • Set and achieve goals for employee retention. Evaluate compensation structure and philosophy and create a template and cadence for constructive performance evaluations.

Organizational Effectiveness

  • Develop and implement new employee evaluation tools and/or systems to provide clarity on compensation and streamline performance evaluations throughout the organization.
  • Understand cultural norms and traditions and be passionate about Brotherhood Crusade’s vision and mission.
  • Manage employee benefits and vendor relationships to comply with enrollment schedules.
  • Partner with management to ensure communication of programs, policies, procedures & guidelines are provided timely to all employees.
  • Monitor and advise managers and supervisors on appropriate performance improvement discipline strategies.
  • Resolve any escalated issues or risks regarding employee complaints or concerns

Education/Training/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, but not required 
  • 5+ years of experience in human resources management, talent management and culture building
  • Proficiency in federal and California employment laws 
  • Demonstrated success crafting and launching an integrated culture and employee engagement strategy
  • Demonstrated success building and implementing a talent management program including performance and compensation evaluation
  • Demonstrated success implementing new HR-related technology across an organization
  • Budget development and resource management experience.
  • SHRM or similar certification preferred

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Seeks feedback from employees and facilitates a collaborative environment when developing any new system or making decisions on new tech/tools
  • Master implementer and consensus builder, especially when introducing new systems and tools into an organization
  • Flexible in developing and managing systems in a growing organization.
  • Knowledge of non-profit HR and compliance regulations
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills 
  • Excels in collaborating and working in a team environment 
  • Excellent problem-solving skills 
  •  Self-starter, able to work independently, and enjoys crafting and implementing new initiatives


$125,000 - $135,000 a year

SALARY & BENEFITS Salary for this position is $125,000 -$135,000 depending on experience. We offer medical, dental and vision benefits. Two weeks of vacation and an organizational wide closure the last week of December. The position also has a staff parking spot at the Brotherhood Crusade office.
