Job Description
The office of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand seeks a Legislative Director for her Senate office. Responsibilities include advising the Senator on legislation and assisting in the development of policy positions and legislative initiatives, managing a large legislative staff and coordinating with non-legislative staff as needed.
The Legislative Director is a senior staff position and involves a high volume of work in a fast-paced environment including work on evenings, weekends and holidays. Ideal candidates will have significant Senate or House legislative experience including managing junior staff, excellent writing and editing skills, a desire to find innovative, bipartisan solutions and the ability to work with everyone from Senators and heads of businesses to advocates and our constituents.
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Develop Senator’s legislative program with Senator and Chief of Staff;
- Serve as liaison with leadership, floor and committee staff;
- Monitor floor and committee activity and recommend legislative strategy;
- Make recommendations for floor votes and sponsoring individual bills;
- Staff Senator at meetings and events as needed;
- Work with Comms staff to ensure all materials are accurate and reflect the Senator’s legislative priorities;
- Oversee writing of and edit all legislative materials including briefs, memos, q&a, letters, etc;
- Meet with organizations and groups of constituents about policy;
- Train and supervise legislative staff, fellows and interns and ensure compliance with Senate and office policies;
- Participate in hiring and evaluation of legislative staff;
- Other duties as assigned.
