Job Description
Republican in a competitive district seeks an experienced Communications Director to serve in their Washington, D.C. office. The Communications Director will lead the development and implementation of communication strategies that promote the Member's priorities and initiatives. Core responsibilities include:
- Creating and executing a robust strategic communications plan that highlights the Member’s priorities and successes;
- Drafting, editing, and distributing press releases, statements, and media advisories;
- Drafting, editing, and strategically placing op-eds;
- Establishing and maintaining relationships with local, state, national, and D.C.-based media;
- Advance press events, prepare the Member for public appearances and interviews, and staff the Member as needed for media engagements.
- Serving as the main on-the-record POC for media, pitching and securing media opportunities at the local and national levels, and responding to press inquiries;
- Managing the Press Assistant;
- Working with the Press Assistant to produce and execute a creative digital media strategy, including videos and a weekly e-newsletter;
- Overseeing a robust franked communications plan including text messages, e-newsletters, digital ads, radio ads, 499s, mailers, etc;
- Overseeing the drafting, editing, and delivery of speeches, both in Committee and on the House Floor;
- Monitor and analyze media coverage of the Member and relevant issues, providing the office with talking points when necessary; and
- Performing other duties as assigned.
This is not an entry-level position; a strong background in communications is required. Exceptional candidates will have significant earned media experience, management experience, strong writing and editing skills with attention to detail, the ability to effectively manage multiple projects in a fast-paced political environment, and an in depth understanding of social media platforms/ digital communication strategies. Familiarity with the U.S. military or prior experience messaging on matters related to national security is strongly preferred.
