Common Justice develops and advances solutions to violence that transform the lives of those harmed and foster racial equity without relying on incarceration. Locally, we operate the first alternative to incarceration and victim service program in the United States to focus on violent felonies in the adult courts. Nationally, we leverage the lessons from our direct service to transform the justice system through partnerships, advocacy, and elevating the experience and power of those most impacted. Rigorous and hopeful, we build practical strategies to hold people accountable for harm, break cycles of violence, and secure safety, healing and justice for survivors and their communities. 

In our direct service work, Common Justice operates restorative justice- based alternative to prison and victim service program for serious and/or violent felony cases such as assault, burglary, and robbery. The project brings 16-26-year-olds responsible for crimes together with those they have harmed and their support people in a facilitated restorative justice dialogue to determine appropriate agreements to make things as right as possible and take the place of a prison sentence. The work includes intensive supervision and violence intervention work with people who have caused harm, wraparound support for the survivors and their loved ones, and engagement of system actors who play critical roles in the diversion of cases. We aim to meet the needs of people harmed by violence, prevent further harm, and improve the lives of people and communities impacted by violence. While we serve the full range of people harmed by crime, a significant portion of the survivors Common Justice works with are men of color, many of them young adults. Common Justice believes that all survivors deserve more options that resonate with their sense of justice, safety, and respect, and that communities deserve programs that help halt cycles of violence, improve the public safety, and meet their needs. 

Primary Responsibilities:

System Partnerships and Participant Engagement: 

* Build and maintain partnerships in the District Attorney's office and with the defense bar;

• Advocate on behalf of the program and potential participants to stakeholders as

appropriate;

• Liaise with external stakeholders/partners; Develop and maintain community partnerships

in assigned borough for referrals;

• Identify and evaluate potential cases for our victim services and alternative to

incarceration program;

• Manage and assess case referrals and work with partners in the District Attorney’s office,

defense bar, harmed and responsible parties, and community on such referrals;

• Conduct outreach to harmed parties (survivors); Conduct intakes and assessments

including home and community visits with responsible parties (defendants);

• Perform outreach for Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx teams to Spanish speaking

harmed parties and Spanish speaking responsible parties as needed;

• Prepare and organize all documents for intakes and pleas;

• Assist with organizing all Spanish language documents for intakes and pleas in other

boroughs;

• Maintain responsibility for representing Common Justice at regular court appearances in

assigned borough; pre-plea and including plea;

• Responsible for entry and audit of program databases and regular reporting on participant

outcomes;

• Conduct CLEs and other presentations to outside partners;

• Responsible for supporting program operations to be conducted with monolingual

Spanish speakers

Restorative Justice Circle Facilitation:

• Plan, coordinate and facilitate restorative justice circles with harmed and responsible

parties; manage all scheduling, and selection and preparation of circle attendees.

• Serve as a thought partner for the Direct Service team in addressing challenges that arise

in circle processes;

• Provide as needed support for staff who facilitate rites of passage and harmed party

welcome circles;

• Facilitate rites of passage and harmed party welcome circles as needed;

Team and Projects:

• Generate and execute creative pathways for case referrals

• Facilitate borough team meetings in collaboration with the Director of Outreach;

• Assist with facilitating training & development and case conference meetings for direct

service staff;

• Interface with system partners and represent Common Justice publicly as needed;

• Assist the Director of Outreach with setting goals and priorities for the department;

• Contribute to grant reporting and management;

• Manage data entry and audits;

• Collaborate and communicate effectively across all teams and departments;

• Supervise interns/externs as needed;

• Provide coverage cross-borough as needed;

Qualifications:

  • M.A., M.S., or J.D. strongly preferred;

• Bilingual skills (English/Spanish);

• Three or more years' experience working with system-involved youth and/or adults

strongly preferred;

• Experience working with victims of crime/survivors of trauma and delivering trauma-informed care preferred;

• Experience with community engagement and working with system-involved youth

and/or the criminal justice field strongly preferred

• Experience working with criminal justice system actors preferred;

• Excellent communication skills;

• Strong restorative justice circle facilitation skills preferred;

• Flexibility and ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently;

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;

• Strong written communication skills and demonstrated ability to utilize program

database for case management;

• Serious commitment to social justice;

• Formerly incarcerated people strongly encouraged to apply

  • Occasional evening and weekend work will be required.

To Apply:

Salary is commensurate with experience within Common Justice’s pay range of

$78,000 - $84,000 for a Senior Manager II level position. A competitive benefits

are NYC-based are strongly preferred.
