Job Description
We are looking for an ambitious, versatile and energetic reporter to cover education and the state budget in Sacramento as part of our growing California bureau. The reporter will break news for an informed California subscriber audience, and deliver high-impact enterprise stories to POLITICO’s national readers on the institutions, interest groups and political players driving education policy in the state and influencing its budget process.
On the education front: The reporter will cover state K-12 and higher education, reporting on the intersection of state and federal politics and education policy. In addition, this reporter will break news on the California Legislature, university governing boards and the state department and board of education. The portfolio will also include local school districts and the Newsom administration's education agenda.
For budget coverage: This reporter will write breaking news and scoops on spending negotiations and stories capturing the wild swings of California's tax revenues. . The beat requires sourcing within the legislative leadership as well as the state Department of Finance and the rest of the Newsom administration.
Candidates must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where they’ll be expected to produce a steady flow of well-written stories and contribute to our daily newsletters.

The anticipated salary range for candidates who will work in Sacramento, CA is $80,000.00-$100,000.00 per year. The final salary offered, which may be higher than the current anticipated salary range, to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and years of experience within the job, type and years of experience within the industry, education, etc.
