The National NeighborWorks Association (NNA) is looking for a part-time External Policy Fellow, who questions the norm, is thoughtful and innovative, has attention to detail, and is passionate about positive community change, public policy, and advocacy. Our ideal candidate would be a good communicator or someone that is looking to strengthen their skills to become one. This position is a great fit for graduate students seeking to grow their professional experience; however, we are open to candidates of diverse backgrounds and experience.

NNA is a national trade association representing NeighborWorks-chartered affordable housing and community development organizations in all 50 states, DC, and Puerto Rico. We advocate and inform federal decision makers to achieve increased financial resources and positive policy change to the benefit of our members and the communities they serve across the country. We work closely with NeighborWorks America to strengthen and increase the impact of NeighborWorks organizations. Policy, relevance, and impact—that’s the focus of NNA. (www.nnwa.us)

Qualifications:

  • Strong research and writing skills
  • An interest in housing policy, the legislative process, and advocacy
  • Knowledge of federal policies and programs
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to balance multiple tasks
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research and track key housing, community development, and appropriations policy
  • Provide direct support to the Director of Policy and Advocacy
  • Attend industry meetings, webinars, and conferences to represent NNA and aid staff
  • Draft external communications on relevant policy news and the work of NNA members
  • Assist staff with preparation for NNA Legislative Day on the Hill occurring in March/April

Duration and Compensation:

  • August or September to December, with a possible extension
  • 20 hours a week (working hours flexible)
  • $17.50 an hour

Location:

  • Much of our work is done remotely, and we will consider all candidates, though our intention is to do more at the NNA office located in Washington, DC.
