Reports to: Senior Director, State Policy
Location: Hybrid - Washington, D.C.
POSITION SUMMARY:
We are seeking a Manager, State Policy, to join the policy team in managing AFSP’s state and local policy work. The successful candidate will work to enhance AFSP’s advocacy presence online and in states and localities throughout the United States and Washington, D.C.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Track state legislation and prepares related action alerts, letters, testimonies, reports, and fact sheets.
- Compile research on state policy issues to support the development of new issue briefs and to maintain existing issue briefs.
- Serve as subject matter expert on key state policy priorities.
- Manage state policy sections of AFSP website and internal ChapterLand state policy pages.
- Lead development of social content and blogs on state policy priority issues, in collaboration with AFSP communications staff.
- Represent organization at relevant coalitions, conferences, and public events on state policy issues.
- Build and maintain relationships with state and local public officials and government agencies.
- Manage and track AFSP communications with state public officials; tracks and responds to social media posts made by key state public officials.
- Work collaboratively with chapters to support state policy activities, including Advocacy Action Days and the provision of legislative and policy technical assistance.
- Support state policy activities of the internship program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education Bachelor’s degree in political science, social work, law, or related field
Experience and/or Training 2 years organizing experience in grassroots campaigns and/or public policy
Technology/Equipment Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Drive
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education N/A
Experience and/or Training 4+ years advocacy and public policy experience, preferably with a nonprofit organization
Technology/Equipment Proficiency with legislative tracking and grassroots engagement software (e.g., Soft Edge, CQ Roll Call, FiscalNote, Quorum, etc.)
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
- Ability to effectively communicate complex policy issues to diverse audiences via printed materials, social media, and other online content writing
- Comfortable giving formal presentations to large and small audiences, in-person and virtually
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external partners
- Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities
- Uphold and exhibit the agency’s Core Values
- Attend all mandatory meetings and trainings
- Ability to work a full-time schedule and have regular in-office and remote attendance
- All other work-related duties as assigned
- Ability to travel as needed to attend work meetings or events

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Hybrid work environment, with a portion of the employee’s time spent in the Washington, D.C. public policy office and a portion of time spent working remotely. 1-2 days working in office.
