About American Economic Liberties Project
The American Economic Liberties Project is a non-partisan, non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to fighting monopoly power. We combine policy and regulatory expertise with strategic communications, coalition-building, and advocacy campaigns to help ensure policymakers protect workers, small businesses, communities, and democracy from monopolistic corporations to advance economic liberty for all.
Position Summary
The American Economic Liberties Project is seeking a part-time contractor to aid in executing state-based strategies and providing communications support to a campaign to reform state policies governing investor-owned electric utilities.
The Utilities Campaign Associate will report to the Director of State and Local Policy and work with Economic Liberties’ team and its 501(c)4 sister organization, Fight Corporate Monopolies.
The ideal candidate will have experience working on state-based advocacy campaigns, building and participating in state-based coalitions, and engaging in strategic communications and media pitching. Experience with utilities policy is strongly preferred, but not required.
Primary responsibilities will include:
- Work with the Director of State and Local Policy to identify and execute state-based policy campaigns around issues of reforming monopoly utilities.
- Develop and execute sharp strategies to build narratives around the current monopoly utility model and grow the political momentum to reform it at the state and local level.
- Work to build and maintain diverse coalitions of state-based and national actors in order to advance legislation in key target states.
- Create rapid response materials, such as talking points, social media content, and committee testimony, around specific utility-related debates.
- Pitch coverage of utility issues to regional, state, and locally-based media.
Qualifications
- At least 2-3 years of state-based political or communications experience.
- Experience building and managing relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
- Strong writing ability, particularly breaking down complex policy issues for a broad and diverse audience.
- Experience pitching to and liaising with regional, local, and national media.
- Strong organizational skills that reflect an ability to keep track of multiple tasks, meet competing deadlines, and communicate potential conflicts with colleagues.
- Enthusiasm for fighting corporate power and corporate special interests.
Compensation and Benefits
This is a part-time contracted position with a rate of $5,000 per month for 20-25 hours per week. This a 12-month contract starting Dec 1, 2024 with opportunity for extension or renewal. American Economic Liberties Project is based in Washington, DC, but this position can be done remotely. Authorization to work in the United States is required; visa sponsorship is not available.
