University Settlement provides a comprehensive network of services to over 10,000 people of all ages lining in the Lower East Side. Its broad network of activities includes adult literacy classes, mental health counseling and intensive case management; group and family day care; support services to the formerly homeless; after-school and summer camp for children and teens; a senior center and a credit union. The Adult Literacy Program provides ESOL and Technology classes to immigrant adults in New York City.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop individual education plans with students and make referrals to other training and education programs  
  • Track progress of student achievement and work with staff to ensure that students’ goals are met 
  • Do follow-up and outreach to help students be successful  
  • Attend workshops, conferences and NY State-mandated meetings as required  
  • Teach ESOL/Technology classes as needed on a substitute basis  
  • Maintain attendance and performance records for students 
  • Coordinate and plan staff meetings  
  • Answer questions from staff and participants regarding the program
  • Observe teachers in class as needed
  • Assist in development of program policies, curriculum and with grant writing and RFP's as needed
  • Complete student assessments, including Best Plus, TABE and other mandated tests
  • Train new staff on ASISTS and other databases
  • Help coordinate and facilitate all external Program activities and develop and maintain relationships with outside groups including but not limited to, Citibank, New Museum, Chinatown Manpower and other groups in the Literacy Zone to enhance services
  • Work with Development office to create Program material to be disseminated to the public
  • Contribute to program blog and participate in social media advocacy campaigns
  • Coordinate flow of information from Program to other Settlement programs
  • Work with staff to ensure that Program complies with NRS and NY State requirements
  • Run teacher team meetings and document outcomes
  • Advise Program Managers on curriculum challenges and suggestions
  • Other duties as assigned by the Program Director

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree required, master's degree preferred in education or related field
  • Minimum of five years of experience in teaching adult ESOL or Adult Education environment
  • Excellent oral, written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills required
  • Experience working with culturally diverse immigrant communities with knowledge of vocational training, computer literacy, employment, and ESOL and HSE programs
  • Experience in data entry with strong computer proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Bilingual English /Spanish preferred

Work Schedule: Full time, Saturday - Wednesday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, weekends required
