The Center for Victims of Torture is hiring a Senior Grants Accountant I to facilitate the financial components of grants for international and US programs/projects through proposal budgeting, ongoing monitoring, reporting, and audit. The position collaborates with program managers, field-based accounting staff and other finance staff on grants from the US government, other governments, and international funding institutions.

Position open to:

  • Candidates located in the U.S. who are authorized to work in U.S. and will not need CVT to sponsor them on a work visa.

Remote status:

  • Position is fully remote within the USA. Candidates located outside of the USA will not be considered.

We are an international nonprofit dedicated to healing survivors of torture. We offer rehabilitation services to those who have been tortured, train partners around the world who can prevent and treat torture, and advocate for human rights and an end to torture. We are headquartered in Minnesota, and we have US offices in Georgia and DC, as well as offices in Africa and the Middle East.

Responsibilities:

  • Grants Accounting: Maintain grant files and subsidiary financial records. Review transactions charged to grants for compliance with budget and grant regulations. Responsible for grants compliance within portfolio. Prepare monthly financial reports and periodic financial analysis and projections for grants and contracts and communicate this information to the key finance staff and program managers. Maintain knowledge of funder regulations for grants and contracts and educate staff about implications for their programs. Prepare reimbursement requests for all grants and contracts. Prepare all financial reports for institutional donors. Provide financial leadership for funder site visits. Work with key finance staff on development of organizational budget as it relates to assigned programs. Serve as a resource and provide technical support to other Grants Accountants, as needed.
  • Partnering with Program Staff: Establish relationships with program managers and institutional grants officers, providing assistance as-needed. Work with appropriate program staff on monitoring subgrants. Participate in regular meetings with program staff and Finance Department staff. Work with program managers to develop budgets for new and renewal funding. Liaise and advise program and field staff regarding financial issues.
  • International Accounting: Review accounting records from international sites and report discrepancies to country directors. Liaise with field staff regarding financial issues. Supervise individuals who audit international receipts.
  • Staff Management: Manage and supervise staff. Hire, train, coach and develop staff members through ongoing feedback as well as formal performance management systems. Hold regular supervisory meetings with direct reports. Coordinate and facilitate team meetings. Coordinate workflow, resources and priorities.
  • Capacity Building: Work with international offices and sub-grant partners to increase their capacity to manage government grants. This may include field visits for purposes of training.
  • Audits: Complete audit tasks as assigned. These audits include periodic funder audits, the annual financial statement, and single audits.

Qualifications:

Required education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration or related field
  • 5 years of progressively responsible grants accounting experience (including at least 2 years of experience in government grants accounting)
  • 2 years of demonstrated success supervising employees in accounting or finance-related roles
  • Previous professional experience with budgets and forecasting, which may include program budgets, organization budgets, grants proposals, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience with financial management of projects with multiple funders and varied reporting requirements, including those with frequent reporting and auditing requirements for US-based and international programs/projects

Preferred education, experience, certificates, licenses or registrations

  • Demonstrated experience with grants compliance
  • Demonstrated experience managing subawards
  • Demonstrated experience with international grants accounting

  • Proficiency with accounting software (CVT currently uses Business Central)
  • Excellent Microsoft Excel skills, including ability to work with complex, multi-tab spreadsheets and pivot tables
  • Ability to develop and maintain professional, collaborative relationships
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally
  • Commitment to engaging in human rights work, and diversity, equity and inclusion efforts within the organization
  • Excellent skills in organization, attention to detail and time management (including the ability to meet deadlines)
  • Ability to travel internationally, including to locations that may be remote and lacking in amenities

  • Time spent on the computer is approximately 90%
  • Time spent in virtual meetings is approximately 40%
