VICE PRESIDENT OF COMMUNICATIONS, AMERICA’S PHYSICIAN GROUPS (APG)

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Location:         This position is hybrid and full-time, with two days per week spent in the Washington, DC, office of APG and three days spent remotely. 

I.      Summary Description:

·      The Vice President of Communications for APG will play the lead role in advancing the organization’s image, brand, and broad awareness of its mission through powerful and substantive communication with key audiences. 

·      The person in this position will develop a deep understanding of the organization’s purpose, the needs of its members, and the federal and state policies supporting value-based health care. 

·      Based on this knowledge, s/he will develop and implement an integrated strategic communications plan to advance APG’s brand identity, broaden awareness of its programs and priorities, and increase the visibility of its programs across key stakeholder audiences.

·      The person in this position will be a highly motivated, detail-oriented self-starter and a collaborative multi-tasker capable of operating under tight deadlines and shifting priorities.

·      S/he will support the President and CEO and other senior leaders as a spokesperson for the organization and a key contact for news media; maintain a vibrant presence for the organization on social media; regularly draft substantive news releases; create video and verbal content for, and regularly update, the APG website; assist in the development and execution of one-pagers and issue briefs; help to raise awareness of APG’s multiple educational opportunities for members; and oversee, edit, and help to write the regular weekly health policy e-newsletter.

II.    Background on APG

·      America’s Physician Groups is a national association representing and supporting approximately 360 physician groups, with 170,000 physicians providing care to nearly 90 million patients, or more than one in four Americans.

·      APG’s motto, ‘Taking Responsibility for America’s Health,’ represents our members’ commitment to providing clinically integrated, coordinated, value-based health care in which physician groups are accountable for the costs and quality of patient care.

·      APG’s members provide comprehensive health care through their coordinated and accountable physician group practices. We as an organization strongly believe that patient-centered, coordinated, and accountable care – so-called “value-based health care” -- offers the highest quality, most efficient delivery mechanism, and greatest value for patients and the nation.

·      APG members have successfully operated under this budget-responsible model for several decades. APG’s mission is to assist accountable physician groups to improve the quality and value of health care provided to patients. Simply put, we are taking responsibility for America’s health.

·      APG has offices in Washington, DC, and in Los Angeles and Sacramento, California.

III.  Responsibilities of the Vice President of Communications

A.    Advancing the organization’s image, brand, and broad awareness of its mission through powerful, impactful, and substantive communication with key audiences. 

B.    Developing a deep understanding of the organization’s purpose, the needs of its members, and the federal and state policies supporting value-based health care. 

C.    Developing and implementing an integrated strategic communications plan to advance APG’s brand identity, broaden awareness of its programs and priorities, and increase the visibility of its programs across key stakeholder audiences.

D.   Supporting the President and CEO and other senior leaders as a spokesperson for the organization and a key contact for news media.

E.    Cultivating and maintaining relationships with key health care reporters and editors, social media bloggers, and editorial staff.

F.    Maintaining a vibrant and active presence for the organization on social media

G.   Regularly draft substantive news releases based on a deep understanding of policies supporting value-based care.

H.   Creating video and verbal content for and regularly updating the APG website

I.     Assisting in the development and execution of one-pagers and issue briefs.

J.     Helping to raise awareness through membership marketing of APG’s multiple educational offerings for members.

K.    Overseeing, editing, and helping to write APG’s regular weekly health policy newsletter, Washington Update.

IV.  Qualifications for Position

A.    Education: A Bachelor’s degree is a minimum requirement; a master’s or other advanced degree in journalism, public policy, public health, or business administration is a plus.

B.    Experience: Ten years experience in communications, public relations, journalism, or other similar field in which the candidate developed comprehensive communications plans and exhibited substantive writing, editing, and video production skills.

C.    Disposition: Innovative thinker; proactive and creative approach.

D.   Background in or knowledge of health care.

E.    Skills and Capacities:      

1.    Ability and desire to engage in deep and rapid learning about APG’s membership and the policy and advocacy issues that matter to the organization. 

2.    Exceptional verbal and written communication skills and the ability to write well and clearly about complex policy issues; ability to condense and simplify complex health policy topics and concepts in value-based care for priority audiences.

3.     Extensive writing and editing experience with print and online communications media

4.    Video production and editing skills, or willingness to learn and practice these regularly.

5.    Ability to use standard current business tools such as PowerPoint, Excel, Zoom, and a CRM system.

6.    Ability to collaborate; possessing interpersonal skills and the ability to both work in a team and take direction.

7.    Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills.

8.    Self-reliant disposition; good problem solver who is results-oriented.

9.    Highly motivated, detail-oriented self-starter and multi-tasker capable of operating under tight deadlines and shifting priorities.

10. Ability to make quick decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs.

V.             Compensation: 

Salary is commensurate with experience and in the $175,000 range, with an annual bonus linked to the achievement of key performance indicators.
