(Full-Time, Exempt Position)

Inner City Law Center (ICLC) is a nonprofit law firm located in the Skid Row neighborhood of Los Angeles. We are looking for extraordinary people to help us end homelessness in Los Angeles. Founded on the fundamental principle that every person should always be treated with dignity and respect, ICLC fights for justice for low-income tenants, working-poor families, people who are disabled or experiencing homelessness, people living with HIV/AIDS, and homeless veterans.

Position Description: The Public Policy Advocate will advocate, organize, and build coalitions to help lead a team working on ambitious public policy efforts to dramatically increase the supply of affordable housing in Los Angeles. The Public Policy Advocate will also support and help coordinate ICLC’s advocacy for improved tenant protections and against the criminalization of homelessness.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify and research potential reforms.
  • Work with ICLC staff and partners to develop policy proposals.
  • Lead ICLC’s efforts to build broad and powerful coalitions that can successfully advocate for the adoption of these proposals.
  • Educate and organize members of the public, the press, ICLC partners, ICLC staff, and the Skid Row Community to successfully advocate for the adoption of policy proposals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • At least three years of experience working as a lawyer or advocating for public policy change.
  • Understanding of issues affecting low-income communities and the role of housing discrimination in society.
  • Understanding of the history of our housing crisis and its impacts on low-income communities.
  • Excellent negotiation skills.
  • Ability to build trust and rapport with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Track record of building productive professional relationships and coalitions with diverse partners.
  • Committed to ICLC’s mission and values.
  • Mission driven and dedicated to eradicating homelessness and dismantling the systems that contribute to it.
  • Committed to equity, diversity, and racial justice.
  • Innovative and solution oriented.
  • Strong research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Organized, detail oriented, and able to assume responsibility quickly and independently in a rapidly growing organization.
  • A high level of independence, initiative, and creativity.
  • Must have reliable transportation.

Hiring Criteria: Commitment to the mission of the organization and comfortable working with people from all cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Strong ability to communicate clearly, diplomatically, and effectively, both orally and in writing. Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills. Strong computer and data management skills. Experience with legal case management systems. Demonstrated ability to organize large amounts of data. Ability to work well with all levels of personnel and support the team’s needs. Self-motivated, willing to learn, ability to meet deadlines, and ability to exercise sound independent judgment.

Compensation: Salary compensation ranges from $80,000 – $105,000 and is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Excellent benefits.
