Job Description

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The NYPD strives to foster a safe and fair city by incorporating Neighborhood Policing into all facets of Department operations, and solve the problems that create crime and disorder through an interdependent relationship between the people and its police, and by pioneering strategic innovation.

NYPD Community ambassadors will serve as liaisons between NYPD leadership and community members, especially those most impacted by the criminal justice system. NYPD Community Ambassadors will be based out of each Patrol Borough office, but will be expected to rotate across different precincts in the Patrol Borough. Reporting to the Community Affairs Bureau, these civilian liaisons will work with a range of neighborhood organizations regarding community concerns, needs and priorities. Areas of focus will include police-community relations, helping citizens navigate the NYPD complaint process, and neighborhood safety, among others.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Serve as high-level NYPD point of contact for constituents, community organizations complainants, and victims and/or next of kin.

Serve as a common point of contact and coordinator for precinct-level police-community bodies such as Build the Block, Precinct Councils, Police Service Area Councils, and other

meetings.

Oversee community committees to assist in developing crime prevention strategies and strategies on how to better serve our communities.

Assist complainants against the police with navigating the complaint and police accountability processes, and with related processes such as obtaining incident video, as well as providing

education and outreach about these processes for the community at large.

Assist victims with navigating and accessing the various supports that are available, such as domestic violence resources.

Advise the Department on enhancing customer service in the Department to improve public outreach and visitor engagement at NYPD facilities

Community Engagement

Attend and coordinate meetings with local organizations, community leaders, youth, business owners, tenant associations, etc.

Recruit and coordinate a network of volunteers, particularly in areas disproportionately affected by the justice system, and engage in community planning efforts to be presented to NYPD

leadership

Convene regular meeting with NYPD leadership and community leaders.

Engage regularly with organizations focused on police reform

Engage with community boards, block associations, NYCHA resident tenant associations, school-based and youth organizations, etc.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U. S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and four years of satisfactory, full-time community liaison, community organization or community relations experience, at least two years of which must have been in a broad administrative or policy-making capacity with responsibility for planning, organizing, coordinating, developing, evaluating and/or administering a large community service program or activity; or

2. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and eight years of satisfactory, full-time experience as described in "1" above, at least two years of which must have been in a broad administrative or policy-making capacity with responsibilities as described in "1" above; or

3. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above. Undergraduate education above the high school level may be substituted for the community liaison, community organization or community relations experience, but not for the two years of broad administrative or policy-making experience described in "1" above, at the rate of 30 semester credits from an accredited college or university (as described above) for each year of experience, up to a maximum of 4 years. Graduate education beyond the baccalaureate degree may be substituted for the community liaison, community organization or community relations experience, but not for the two years of broad administrative or policy-making experience described in "1" above, on the basis of 30 graduate credits from an accredited college or university (as described above) for each year of experience, up to a maximum of 2 years. However, all candidates must possess a four-year high school diploma or its educational

equivalent approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and two years of full-time experience in a broad administrative or policy-making capacity with responsibilities as described in "1" above.

Preferred Skills

Prefer candidates with graduate degree in public policy, public administration

Bilingual, preferably Spanish

Individual should have deep community ties in the fields of law, business, or social work

Resident of NYC

Proven record of community engagement

Significant experience working in or with New York City government

Ability to think creatively, a willingness to consider new approaches

Excellent communication, writing, organizational, interpersonal, and multi-tasking skills, including the ability to take initiative, prioritize tasks, and work independently.

Hours/Shift

This position will require work in the evenings and on weekends. Regular work hours will be 12 to 8pm OR 1 to 9pm.

Work Location

One position will be assigned to cover each Patrol Borough. Community Ambassadors will spend a majority of their time travelling to various locations within the community. Candidates must have the ability to travel by public transportation and on foot.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
