Job Announcement

Sully District Supervisor Kathy Smith’s Office with Fairfax County Government is seeking a Staff Aide/Community Liaison. Previous study or work experience in relevant fields is preferred but not necessary.

Background
Fairfax County is comprised of nine magisterial districts, one of which is the Sully District. Each district is represented by an elected official titled the District Supervisor. The nine District Supervisors and the Chair form the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.

The District Supervisors have offices located in their respective districts and staff members to assist constituents. The Sully District Office is a team of five to six with each staff member overseeing different subject areas. This position provides opportunities to learn about local government functions and positively impact the community.

Note: Salary is negotiable based on experience.

Illustrative Duties

  • Responds to phone calls, emails, and in-person inquiries from constituents and other stakeholders;
  • Collaborates with staff from other County departments to provide requested information to the District Supervisor and members of the public;
  • Researches, organizes, and maintains legislative and other materials for board members and staff;
  • Assists in planning various aspects of special projects and essential programs, to include scheduling and coordinating meetings;
  • Drafts and/or edits written materials, such as correspondence and summaries of information for public dissemination;
  • Sets up, monitors, records, and provides staff assistance for board meetings, including evening or weekend meetings;
  • Maintains an e-mail list for electronic dissemination of materials;
  • Files, copies, and maintains records.

  • Interview techniques sufficient to obtain information related to administrative matters;

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to a bachelor's degree in communications, political science, public policy, public administration, business administration, English, sociology, public relations, journalism or or a related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bilingual with fluency in Spanish, Korean, or other languages;
  • Familiarity with local governments and their legislative processes;
  • Ability to diagnose issues strategically and propose solutions;
  • Ability to take initiative by implementing new ideas and taking on special projects;
  • Willingness to question the status quo with the goal of improving procedures;
  • Ability to communicate effectively and provide excellent customer service;
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently;
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite applications to include Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; and
  • Familiarity with Customer Relationship Management Software (CRM).

The appointee to the position must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.
