Minimum Qualifications

The New York State Senate Minority Conference is seeking applicants to fill the position of Counsel. Counsel will work as part of a team on behalf of the Senate Minority Leader, Senators, and relevant central and member staff to research and review legislation, policy proposals, and laws.

To be considered, you must have a Juris Doctor (JD) degree and strong writing and oratory skills. Experience in a legislative, political, or governmental context is preferred.

Nights and weekend work required as needed. All candidates are expected to live and work in the Capital Region of New York.

Duties Description
The essential functions in this dynamic role include:

  • Providing legal, policy and budget analysis for the Senate Minority Conference;
  • Tracking committees and legislation active in the state Senate and state Assembly;
  • Conducting legal and policy-related research;
  • Preparing materials and briefing Senators and staff on legislation, policy initiatives, and regulatory changes;
  • Assisting Senators in preparation for public hearings, roundtable discussions, forums and other public meetings and events;
  • Working with Albany and statewide staff to assist Senators in drafting and analyzing legislation and policy;
  • Meeting with and building relationships with relevant stakeholders, advocacy, and constituency groups; and
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Additional Comments
Salary range: $80,000 - $90,000. Compensation will be determined by educational experience and professional experience.
