The Associated Students (AS) is a comprehensive campus auxiliary corporation of CSU, Chico serving thousands of students, faculty, staff and community members through myriad student programs, services and business enterprises. With an annual budget of more than $21M, the AS operates residential and retail dining services, the Bell Memorial Union, the Wildcat Recreation Center (WREC), and administers the contract for the Wildcat Store (bookstore). Additionally, the AS offers a wide variety of services and programs such as: CAVE (Community Action Volunteers in Education), Child Development Lab, Adventure Outings, Recycling, Sustainability and student government. The AS employs more than 100 full and part-time employees and more than 750 students.

The Associated Students is now hiring for the position Student Chief of Staff. This is a part-time, non-benefited student position that will work no more than 20 hours per week while school is in session. The pay rate is $16.40 per hour. The schedule for this position is based upon department needs and is subject to change at any time. To be eligible for student employment, you must be enrolled at CSU, Chico with at least 6 units (undergraduate student) or 4 units (graduate student).

The Government Affairs and Student Involvement Center at the Associated Students is a dynamic work environment that provides a space for elected student representatives to advocate on behalf of students on critical issues impacting the student experience. We are seeking to fill our Chief of Staff role that supports the AS President and the work within the Government Affairs Office as well as the Student Involvement Center and their mainstream operations.

Hours will vary week-to-week and will range from 15-18 hours a week.

DEFINITION

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Government Affairs, will provide administrative, communication and clerical support to AS President and Student Involvement Center.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is a working level classification which is assigned a variety of office support tasks requiring familiarity with the services, policies, and procedures of the Government Affairs Office.

DUTIES

  • Greet and provide excellent customer service to every individual that enters the Government Affairs Office
  • Maintain regular communication and project updates with the AS President and elected representatives through email, Microsoft Teams and other pre-determined communication platforms.
  • Act as a communication liaison between the Government Affairs Office and the Student Involvement Center.
  • Research and summarize findings on potential projects and initiatives identified by the AS President.
  • Draft proposals, emails and discussions items related to current projects and initiatives.
  • Maintain a high level of professional communication both verbally and through all written correspondence.
  • Assist in the managing of the AS President social media, calendaring and communication efforts as assigned.
  • Attend meetings with campus leaders, take detailed notes and distributed to appropriate constituents.
  • Assist with the promotion of student engagement opportunities offered through Government Affairs and the Student Involvement Center .
  • Perform basic office tasks (copying, filing, scanning, organizing, etc.)
  • Reserve rooms and coordinate meetings as requested by the AS President.
  • Assist AS President and elected student representatives with small projects and events as assigned.
  • Provide regular opportunities for student engagement in the office by providing passive opportunities for students to learn about and/or discuss topics being discussed by elected representatives.
  • Meet regularly with director supervisor and the AS President.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in the Government Affairs Office and throughout the Bell Memorial Union, in an office environment, and possibly outside environments including the California State University, Chico campus and community; continuous contact with staff, campus community, students, and public.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Sit for extended periods; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer terminals, telephones, calculators, copiers and scanners; reasonable accommodations will be made.

Experience:

Administrative support and/or clerical experience preferred.

Education:

Currently en rolled in at least 6 units at California State University, Chico (4 units for graduate students).

Special Requirements:

  • You must plan to enroll in classes at Chico State during the 2024-2025 academic year.
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule Monday- Friday and on occasion some weekends.
  • Position will not be required to work over Thanksgiving break, spring break, but some of winter break may be expected.
