American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) is a dynamic trade association representing high-tech American manufacturers of virtually the entire U.S. supply of gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, other fuels, and home heating oil, as well as the petrochemicals used as building blocks for thousands of vital products in daily life, from paints to plastics, space suits to solar panels, and medicines to mobile phones. As a national trade association representing American refineries and petrochemical companies, AFPM brings together staff, members, affiliates, and thought leaders at major conventions and smaller gatherings, both virtual and in-person, throughout the year.

As we continue to grow and expand our reach, we are excited to announce an opening for a Senior Director, Industry Analysis to analyze energy markets, the impact of regulations and legislation on those markets, and the fuel and petrochemical manufacturing industries, in support of AFPM’s advocacy efforts. We are looking for an individual with extensive knowledge and understanding of crude oil, refined petroleum products, and renewable fuels markets. Candidates should have exceptional quantitative and problem-solving skills, be intellectually curious, and be an excellent writer and communicator.


Responsibilities

  • Studies global and US energy and petrochemical markets, identifying emerging issues and trends, monitoring shifts in market dynamics and trade flows, supply/demand outlooks and economic data, and analyzing the impact of proposed legislation and regulatory changes.
  • Collaborates within AFPM to develop briefs, white papers, presentations, articles, and webinars on relevant issues, with the objective to raise internal as well as public understanding of issues, enhance AFPM’s capacity to explain market developments of short- and long-run significance, and inform AFPM’s advocacy strategy.
  • Develops and manages externally supported studies/projects, collaborating with AFPM regulatory, legal and government relations staff to define requirements, working with vendors and AFPM staff to develop contracts, manage projects, finalize deliverables and ensure projects meet expectations.
  • Continuously and deliberately enhances subject matter expertise, expanding knowledge to include emerging issues, e.g., decarbonization.
  • Effectively presents data and analysis to audiences with diverse levels of knowledge and understanding about energy, transportation fuels and petrochemical manufacturing.
  • Compiles data and conducts analysis relating to research areas such as global crude oil balances, outlook for refined product demand, renewable fuels, electric vehicles, and the impact of regulations such as the Renewable Fuel Standard, Low Carbon Fuel Standards, Advanced Clean Cars II, Light Duty Vehicle Rule, on the refining and petrochemical manufacturing industries.
  • Keeps department head and others well informed about ongoing efforts and emerging issues and concerns.
  • Provides significant support and mentorship to junior analysts within the Industry Analysis function and across the AFPM organization.
  • Performs other ad hoc duties and required of the position.


Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in a similar role.
  • Subject matter expert level knowledge of the petroleum refining, crude oil, renewable fuels, and petrochemical manufacturing industries, as well as refined product, oil, natural gas, renewable fuels and petrochemical markets.
  • Understanding of data, information and short- and long-term outlooks about refined products, petrochemicals, crude oil, natural gas, including those provided by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, International Energy Agency, OPEC, KAPSARC, JODI, Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Strong communication skills; ability to write clearly and informatively while presenting numerical data effectively.
  • Ability to access and synthesize information to analyze complex questions; able to collect, collate, organize and synthesize data and information and to make that data and information comprehensible across an audience with diverse levels of understanding.
  • Strong quantitative analytical skills and well-developed understanding of statistical concepts and methods.
  • Readily adapts to changes in the work environment, manages competing demands, and demonstrates the ability to grasp new concepts quickly.
  • Takes initiative and can work with others across the AFPM organization and with member company representatives and industry organizations.
  • Proficiency in developing charts, tables, and infographics on multiple platforms.
  • Ability to travel independently up to 20% domestic travel.
  • Bachelor's degree in petroleum engineering, economics, finance, strategy, mathematics, statistics or other related field or equivalent work experience. Master’s degree preferred.
