The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) is seeking a full-time Communications Manager. This individual will play an integral role in implementing and advancing our external communications efforts, including managing the public and members-only websites, social media profiles and media relations.
The Communications Manager will work in collaboration with the Director of Communications on all aspects of GHSA’s communications with our members, partners, and the media. This position is responsible for:

Overseeing GHSA's public and member-only websites, including:

  • Developing and posting fresh content and making day-to-day website updates, this includes monitoring for changes in traffic safety laws, revising current data and programs information, etc.
  • Collaborating on comprehensive website redesign initiatives
  • Providing search engine optimization
  • Tracking and reporting website metrics
  • Remaining current on website technology and security best practices in order to provide continuous improvement recommendations

Supporting GHSA's email communications, including:

  • Producing email updates for GHSA members
  • Managing GHSA's outreach databases.

Managing GHSA's social media presence, including:

  • Developing and scheduling posts for X/Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn
  • Engaging with followers on social media platforms
  • Tracking and reporting social media metrics
  • Monitoring social media trends and making recommendations to bolster GHSA’s presence

Supporting GHSA's Annual Meeting communications, including:

  • Building and managing the mobile app
  • Developing website, social media, and email marketing content
  • Writing content for the printed newsletters and signage
  • Assisting with other print and digital marketing and communications assets

Supporting GHSA's media relations initiatives, including:

  • Monitoring news coverage and sharing updates with GHSA staff, Board members, and/or partners
  • Responding to media inquiries in a timely manner, including handling interviews, as needed
  • Identifying and recommending new opportunities for media coverage
  • Drafting and finalizing news releases and media advisories for dissemination to the media
  • Developing talking points for GHSA staff

Providing writing and editing support to GHSA staff

Other duties as assigned aligned with the objectives of GHSA

Ideal candidates will have a bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of progressive experience in communications. Experience with email marketing systems, website content management systems, social media platforms, and basic graphic design principles and programs is required as well as experience working with reporters. Experience working in a nonprofit or an association is desirable. The position requires up to 5% travel.

GHSA is a Washington, DC-based nonprofit association committed to reducing the number of crashes, injuries and deaths on U.S. roadways, so everyone arrives at their destination safely. We represent the state and territorial highway safety offices that implement programs to address behavioral highway safety issues, including impaired and distracted driving, speeding, seat belt use and pedestrian safety.

Starting salary is $70,000 – $80,000 (dependent on experience) + Benefits. GHSA currently provides a hybrid work environment (two telecommuting days per week + three days in the GHSA office, following a 90-day introductory period).
