Federal Legislative Liaison


The Federal Legislative Liaison is a 20-hour-per-week position, without benefits, within the Office of Government & Community Relations in the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The position has a direct reporting line to the Vice President. Some travel is required.


65% - Assist in all operations of the Virginia Tech Hokies on the Hill Undergraduate Internship Program in Washington, DC.


The Virginia Tech Hokies on the Hill (HOH) Undergraduate Internship Program provides students with an opportunity to work on Capitol Hill, learn firsthand above the U.S. Congress and politics, gain real-world experience in the nation’s capital – all while earning credit for a full-time course load. The program is administered through the Virginia Tech Office of Government & Community Relations and is open to only Virginia Tech sophomores, juniors and seniors.


 Responsibilities include:


o  Engage Capitol Hill offices to maintain, and, if needed, secure partner offices for the program.


o  Promote the program to current Virginia Tech students through social media, in class presentations, speaking at club and organizational meetings on campus, and through campus list-serves.


o  Oversee the application process and participate in applicant interviews.


o  Work with selected students on resume, cover letter, and interviewing skills.


o  Organize all aspects of class planning, including communication with students on the class syllabus, class meeting locations and times, and AV classroom needs, etc.


o  Assist with the development of quizzes and essays.


o  Assist with writing letters of recommendation.


o  Lead the development of fundraising materials and strategies.


 

35% - Assist the Office of Government & Community Relations


o  Regularly assist in securing congressional letters/actions supportive of Virginia Tech research proposals.


o  Work with congressional offices in support of non-policy immigration related matters.


o  Engage in research and editing of Office of Government & Community Relations documents.


o  Assist the Office of Government & Community Relations team as needed.




Requirements:


·      Bachelor’s degree


·      Hill experience or other commensurate experience.


·      Proven ability to work independently.


·      Demonstrated experience in relationship building.
