The Office of U.S. Senator-elect Ruben Gallego seeks an experienced and highly motivated Chief Counsel. The Chief Counsel will act as the principal legal advisor, providing strategic legal guidance on legislative, regulatory, and policy matters, with a particular focus on immigration policy and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) oversight. This is a senior leadership role requiring exceptional legal acumen, a deep understanding of the legislative process, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

Location: Washington, D.C.

Salary: Competitive, commensurate with experience

Position Type: Full-Time

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive legal advice on legislative, policy, and procedural matters, with emphasis on immigration, border security, and DHS oversight.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate legislation, amendments, and legal memoranda related to immigration and other issue areas.
  • Monitor and analyze legal developments, including court decisions, regulatory actions, and other issues relevant to the Senator’s legislative agenda.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • In-depth understanding of immigration law and legislative procedures. 
  • Proven leadership and management skills, with the ability to oversee a legal team.
  • Excellent analytical, research, and writing skills. 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across diverse teams.
