Punchbowl News is a news company founded by Anna Palmer, Jake Sherman, John Bresnahan and Rachel Schindler focused on power, people and politics in Washington.


The Job: Punchbowl News is looking for a reporter to join our growing editorial team and take the lead on informing our readers about the most important policy debates dominating Congress. The best candidate will have extensive reporting experience, is well sourced on Capitol Hill and will thrive in a startup-oriented newsroom. Most importantly, this person should have a deep understanding of how policy is conceived and maneuvered through Congress. They should also be able to translate complex legislative ideas and bills into an informative yet readable format.


Congress is full of political drama these days, often overshadowing the consequential policy work being done by committees and on the House and Senate floors. Whether it’s the annual spending bills, efforts to rein in corporate giants or achieve policy goals through the tax code, Congress is always working on consequential policies. The ideal candidate will be to help make sure these important issues get the notice they deserve and that Punchbowl News readers are told about them first.


The Punchbowl News policy reporter will work closely with the entire editorial team to own coverage of the power, people and politics shaping legislation.


Responsibilities:

  • Anchor a weekly policy-focused newsletter. This newsletter will set the stage for the week, informing readers about the policy debates dominating Capitol Hill and key legislative agenda action they should know about.
  • File alerts multiple times a week on key policy debates shaping Capitol Hill
  • Contribute to our flagship newsletters, AM, Midday and PM, as warranted
  • Curate key editorial content in Punchbowl News’ legislative intelligence platform


Qualifications:

  • Washington and Capitol Hill reporting experience
  • A deep understanding of the policy conversations driving Washington
  • Two or more years of reporting experience
  • Ability to write clean, concise copy
  • A record of breaking news and high-value enterprise


Compensation & Benefits:

The starting salary for this role is in the range of $75,000 - $100,000. Final compensation will be based on scope, work experience and relevant skills.
