Background

Opened to the public in 1935, The Frick Collection is a world-renowned art museum consisting of more than 1,800 works of art from the ninth to the nineteenth centuries displayed in the intimate surroundings of the former home of Pittsburgh industrialist Henry Clay Frick. It is considered one of the world's most perfect museums and the residence is one of New York City’s few remaining Gilded Age mansions. The Frick welcomes nearly 300,000 visitors a year to its tranquil mansion on the Upper East Side, encouraging visitors to closely observe, reflect, and engage with its esteemed collection.

The Frick Art Reference Library, founded by Mr. Frick’s daughter, Helen Clay Frick, in 1920, is an internationally recognized research library that serves as one of the world's most complete resources for the study of Western art. Our entire staff ensures that the resources of The Frick Collection are made accessible and inviting to “all persons whomsoever,” in accordance with the wishes of the museum’s founder.

Since summer 2020, The Frick has been in a temporary home, Frick Madison, at 75th Street and Madison Avenue (the former Whitney Museum of American Art), while renovations are underway at the mansion on 70th Street. Construction has progressed rapidly and, in addition to special exhibition galleries, education spaces we have added enhanced visitor amenities and accessible spaces. Frick Madison is now closed to the public. Staff is in the process of moving back to 1 East 70th Street and we hope to open to the public in early 2025.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Associate Director of Development, the Head of Individual Giving is responsible for The Frick Collection’s Membership and Annual Fund, which currently raise around $6 million annually. The Head of Individual Giving’s main objective includes managing the successful growth of all membership programs through renewal letters, acquisition campaigns, and personal outreach, and in coordination with their team, designing a year-long programming calendar for members at all levels. Additionally, they oversee the Young Fellows Steering Committee and lead the annual Young Fellows Curatorial Trip. The Head of Individual Giving supervises a team of four and also maintains a portfolio of 150 donors/prospects for cultivation and solicitation for the Frick’s Capital Campaign, higher-level membership, and other Frick projects as needed.

Requirements/Education

  • The education and/or experience requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability required to successfully perform the essential duties of this position.

Minimum five to seven years of professional experience in a nonprofit development office, with work done in membership and event fundraising.· Prior management experience and a demonstrated track record of soliciting and closing gifts is required. · Excellent organizational and communication skills (both written and verbal) and ability to interact with colleagues and constituents at all levels. · Superb attention to detail and an ability to handle multiple projects and requests on an ongoing basis. · Computer fluency in Microsoft environment plus Raiser’s Edge and Acme.· Bachelor’s Degree (major in art history, English, or communications preferred). · An interest in fine and or decorative arts is beneficial.· A flexible team player who enjoys challenges, collaboration, and innovation.

Physical Requirements

The physical requirements of this role are needed to perform the essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation(s).

Physical requirements are comparable to most office roles. Ability to interact in-person with colleagues. Use common office tools and machines (computer, phone). Ability to traverse throughout the office and building(s) both inside and outside of the museum and visit different levels of the building.

The Frick requires all employees be fully vaccinated and to have received booster vaccines against COVID 19.

Employment Status and Compensation

This role is a full-time Exempt role.There are options for remote work on a limited basis, as determined by departmental needs and under the supervision of the Associate Director of Development. Though, staff will be expected to work onsite much of the time.Since Development hosts events and other activities for members and donors on evenings and weekends, the Head of Individual Giving may be relied upon to work to support these evening and weekend events. The salary for this exempt role is $115,000-$125,000.

Paid Holidays: All full-time employees are eligible for up to14 paid holidays. This includes all federal holidays plus: Juneteenth and Election Day, plus four floating holidays, two each to be used in the first and second half of each calendar year.

Sick and Vacation time: Eligible full-time employees accrue up to 12 sick and 12 vacation days in their first year of employment. In subsequent years, eligible full-time employees accrue up to 12 sick days and 25 vacation days/year.

Family leave: In addition to adhering to all federal family leave laws, we provide all eligible employees with paid bereavement and family leave.

Retirement: The Frick supports all employees in planning for retirement by offering participation in a Tax Deferred Savings Plan – 403(b) and a defined benefit pension plan.
