Serves as the liaison between the City of Erie and its New American, refugee, and immigrant communities to ensure equitable access to City services and resources and implement the Welcoming Erie initiative.

:

The duties of this job include, but are not limited to:

1. Lead/coordinate meetings of the Mayor’s New American Council to share information and resources, listen to/relay questions and concerns back to City Departments, and respond to/resolve issues.

2. Maintain Certified Welcoming City status for the City of Erie by implementing a Welcoming Erie initiative and meeting standards and criteria set forth by Welcoming America,which supports inclusive communities across America.

3. Connect immigrants and refugees to services related to health, employment, education, families, technical assistance, entrepreneurship opportunities, the Redevelopment Authority’s housing resources, and grant and loan programs for small businesses.

4. Collaborate with refugee resettlement agencies in the City of Erie.

5. Prepare an annual Welcoming Erie report, at the end of each year in collaboration with the Community Liaison and the Diversity Coordinator that details the City’s initiatives over the past year and recommends updates to the City’s DEI plan, practices, and initiatives.

6. Serve as a resource for those who do not speak English, or have limited proficiency in English, by developing and implementing a language access plan for the City of Erie and ensuring that City employees receive cultural competency training, in collaboration with the Departments of Human Resources and Communications.

7. Communicate city services, initiatives, and resources to immigrants and refugees via the Welcoming Erie section of the City’s website, social media storytelling, listening sessions, neighborhood groups, and forums.

8. Collaborate with the Love Your Block initiative to engage in grassroots community outreach.

9. Collaborate with Cultures, Arts, Festivals, and Events of Erie (CAFE) to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion in City events.

10. Encourage civic engagement by inviting New Americans to apply to serve on Authorities, Boards, and Commissions.

11. Welcome and celebrate immigrants and refugees and ensure equitable access to services and resources, leadership opportunities, economic development initiatives, civic engagement, and safe communities.

12. Assist the Human Resources Department with implementation and outcomes measurement of the City’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Plan.

13. Assist the Department of Planning and Neighborhood Resources with implementation of the Community Engagement Plan.

14. Attend all naturalization ceremonies at the U.S. Federal Courthouse in Erie and prepare handouts to be given to New Americans at those ceremonies.

15. Coordinate the Mayor’s Hispanic Latine Advisory Council in collaboration with the Community Liaison.

16. Serve as a liaison to our Sister Cities.

17. Perform other duties as assigned.

:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree preferred in fields related to government affairs, public administration, communications, project management, strategic planning, social work, and/or related fields
  • Understanding of Certified Welcoming standards of Welcoming America
  • Minimum of two years’ experience working with refugees and immigrants within the community
  • Bilingual or multilingual preferred
  • Willingness to work flexible hours: weekend/evenings in the community
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite
  • A proactive candidate, who takes initiative and can work independently and as a part of a team
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Administrative/analytical skills
  • Project management capabilities

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $45,000.00 per year
