JOB DESCRIPTION: DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATE

Overview

Library of America (LOA) seeks a creative, motivated, and highly organized Development Associate to serve as an integral member of its Advancement team. This position offers valuable experience in a range of essential development, event planning, and communications activities. Working directly with the President and the Chief Development Officer, the Associate provides ideas, project management, and administrative support for all donor cultivation and fundraising efforts, including appeals, events, and print/e-communications to members and donors. The ideal candidate will have genuine interest in American literature and/or history and passion for LOA’s mission, excellent initiative and attention to detail, the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, strong writing skills, a positive attitude, and a high level of poise and discretion.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day development operations, including processing incoming gifts, managing donor records, preparing gift acknowledgements, tracking schedules of gifts and pledges.
  • Create and maintain mailing lists as needed for solicitations, newsletters, and other donor correspondence.
  • Prepare and execute components for print and email direct response appeals.
  • Analyze giving trends and run database queries.
  • Perform prospect research on donor and member prospects.
  • Coordinate membership program, including renewals and communications.
  • Oversee logistics for events for LOA supporters, including invitations and RSVPs, venues, expenses, and timely follow-up. Assist with online events as needed.
  • Assist with content creation for print and e-newsletters and annual report.
  • Assist the President and Chief Development Officer with correspondence, additional research, grant proposals and reports, special projects, and other administrative tasks, as needed.

Required Skills/Qualifications

  • Interest in literature and/or history and enthusiasm for the mission of Library of America is essential.
  • 1-4 years of experience working in development is preferred.
  • Proficiency with Raisers Edge or another donor database is strongly preferred.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent computer skills (Word, Excel, newsletter platform such as Constant Contact or Campaign Monitor).
  • Strong writing and editing ability.
  • Demonstrated experience spearheading and completing special projects.
  • Superior professionalism and discretion in written, phone, and in-person communications.

This is a full-time hybrid position with an expectation of working onsite 3 days per week and a generous benefits package. Salary range $60,000-$70,000, commensurate with experience.
