Policy officer / Temporary reinforcement for the Human Rights Section (6 months)
We are
The delegation of the European Union to the United Nations in New York is looking for a temporary reinforcement for the human rights team. Our team deals with issues related to all human rights – civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights – and fundamental freedoms and covers the work of the UN General Assembly Third Committee, the Commission of the Status of Women and other related meetings and processes at the UN in New York.
Under guidance and instructions from the EU External Action Service and other EU institutions in Brussels, we work and coordinate closely with the delegations of the 27 EU Member States in New York to ensure a strong and united EU action and voice in our multilateral work at the UN in New York.
We offer
We offer a 6 months temporary position as Policy Officer as from February 2025. The main focus of the Policy Officer will be gender equality and women’s empowerment, which includes preparations for EU participation in the 69th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, in coordination with the team, Brussels and EU Member States.
The responsibilities include drafting EU statements, coordinating EU positions, negotiating outcome document and resolutions, planning and organizing EU meetings, events and programs for visiting delegations, as well as timely reporting on meetings and processes. The job function may be modified in accordance with the needs of the Delegation.
The monthly salary ranges between $8,075 and $9,929 depending on the candidate’s status in the United States.
We offer a collegial atmosphere in a dynamic international environment. The work will be conducted in person at the EU Delegation located on 666 Third Avenue, New York, 10017.
The expected start date will be February 1st, 2025.
We are looking for a colleague with
- University Diploma, preferably Master’s Degree
- Proven background, knowledge and/or experience in the field of human rights and particularly on gender equality an women’s empowerment
- Previous multilateral work experience, at an EU or EU Member States delegation or within the United Nations system, is require
- Experience from negotiating in UN multilateral context
- Fluent in English orally and in writing
- Excellent analytical and negotiation skills
- Strong organisational and communication skills
- Positive and flexible attitude, ability to work independently, as well as in a team, under pressure
It is important to note that the Delegation of the European Union to the United Nations does not sponsor visas. Applicants must have an existing and valid US work authorization that does not require sponsorship by the Delegation (i.e. EAD card, green card, US citizen, only G1 or G3 visas for the spouses of EU officials posted at an EU Member State Mission to the United Nations.
