Summary:
The Advisor for Immigration and Programming monitors the regulatory updates affecting F and J nonimmigrant populations and ensures that students and scholars are provided with clear and comprehensive information, advice, and programming support to stay compliant with legal responsibilities as mandated by the Federal laws. The Advisor liaises with the university’s pathway and other special programs for immigration services and programming support and prepares periodic reports on the admission and retention of these subgroups of students.

  • Advising and Immigration Services:As an Alternate Responsible Officer for the J1 Exchange Visitor Program and Designated School Official for the F-1 student program, the Advisor for Immigration and Programming is authorized by DHS and the Department of State to issue immigration documents for students and scholars in the F-1 and J-l non-immigrant categories. The Advisor provides advice on all legal aspects concerning work privileges, travel, the extension of stay, family matters, change of status, academic activities, personal and cultural adjustment issues, and other related matters, which affect the international population in the F and J categories. The Advisor is responsible for staying current with regulatory and legislative updates affecting F-1 and J-1 students, compiling and maintaining the ISSS admission policy manual, and preparing and communicating immigration information to students and staff through memos, web-based information, social media outreach, meetings, other informational materials, and responding to inquiries via various ISSS emails. The Advisor is responsible for creating immigration documents for incoming students, designing, delivering immigration sessions and workshops for students, scholars, and the university departments, and serving as a point of contact for one or two admissions units on campus.
  • Communication Management and Customer Relations: The Advisor compiles and maintains ISSS web pages for incoming students and admission units' reference for eligibility requirements to obtain immigration documents, advises admitting units and students on visa applications and arrival matters, and communicates policies and procedures to admitting units on student and scholar immigration document eligibility, identifies deadlines and enforces compliance by the admitting units with the established criteria.The person in this position responds to requests from students, families, and admitting units and compiles periodic reports on office admission activities, which include immigration document requests, admission and conversion data, enrollment data, and SEVIS registration. The Advisor is the ISSS point of contact for short-term programs and the Accelerator and the Access programs for immigration services and compliance.
  • Programming and Social Media Outreach: The Advisor collaborates with ISSS staff and campus partners to ensure the successful design and implementation of international orientation programs for incoming students in the fall and spring semesters and develops and presents orientation sessions as needed. The Advisor conducts needs assessments of specific subgroups of incoming and returning students and collaborates with the ISSS team and the campus partners for creating and offering cultural programs and other resources to meet emerging needs. The Advisor designs and implements program evaluation tools and submits summary reports to the Associate Director. The person in this position utilizes various social media channels to ensure ISSS programs and updates are effectively announced to students and scholars.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

Salary Range:
  • $64,074 annually.
Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Master's degree.
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience.
