Job Description
The Office of U.S. Senator-elect Ruben Gallego seeks an experienced, strategic, and dynamic Arizona-based Press Secretary to lead public communications and media relations efforts. The ideal candidate will be key in advancing the Senator’s message, legislative priorities, and public outreach through traditional and digital media platforms. Fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred.
Location: Phoenix, AZ
Salary: Competitive, commensurate with experience
Key Responsibilities:
- Monitor news coverage, develop rapid response plans, and manage media inquiries as needed.
- Provide daily news briefings for the Senator and staff.
- Draft press releases, op-eds, public statements, talking points, speeches, and newsletters. Translate complex policy issues into clear and compelling messages for diverse audiences.
- Organize and execute press events, including town halls, press conferences, and public engagements. Collaborate with legislative and district office staff to highlight key initiatives and amplify constituent outreach.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy aligned with the Senator’s legislative and political goals. Think strategically to identify media opportunities and craft proactive communications campaigns.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, political science, or a related field.
- 3+ years of experience in media relations, journalism, political communications, or a similar role. Capitol Hill or campaign experience is a plus.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to translate complex policy issues into clear and compelling messages.
- Strong understanding of the media landscape, including experience working with reporters, editors, and producers.
- Ability to think strategically, multitask effectively, and respond quickly to breaking news and media opportunities.
