Job Description
Position Summary
The American Birding Association (ABA) seeks a full-time Finance Director. The Finance Director will report to ABA’s Executive Director and work closely with ABA’s Conservation & Operations Manager and public accountants. The Finance Director will act as ABA’s finance expert and be responsible for managing a variety of activities.
Financial Management
- Analyze and present monthly financial reports and oversee all financial, project/program, and grants accounting.
- Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, liaise with external auditors and the finance committee of the board of directors, and assess any changes deemed necessary.
- Oversee and lead the annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the ED; administer and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes and keep senior staff informed of the organization’s financial status.
- Manage accounts payable, invoicing and receivables, organizational cash flow and forecasting.
- Manage a robust financial management/ reporting system; ensure that the contract billing and collection schedule is adhered to, and that financial data and cash flow are steady and support operational requirements.
- Update and implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices; improve the finance department’s overall policy and procedure manual.
- Effectively communicate and present the critical financial matters quarterly to the board of directors.
Human Resources and Administration
- Further develop ABA’s human resources and administration, enhancing professional development, compensation and benefits, performance evaluation, training and recruiting.
- Ensure that recruiting processes are consistent and streamlined.
- Establish and manage a comprehensive training program to educate employees regarding staff tools, policies, and procedures.
- Work closely and transparently with all external partners including third-party vendors and consultants.
- Ensure employee insurance, benefits, payroll and taxes, and company insurance are reconciled, and payments made in a timely manner.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher in accounting, finance, or business administration.
- Extensive experience working in accounting, finance, or related fields.
- Comprehensive knowledge of financial management principles.
- Strong analytical skills, including the ability to evaluate financial data.
- Strategic and critical thinking.
- Experience with Google Drive, Calendar, Sheets, and Docs.
- Experience with QuickBooks, Excel, Word and PowerPoint
- Effective communication skills across various stakeholder groups.
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
- Certified Public Accountant, Chartered Financial Analyst or Certified Financial Planner.
- Background in accounting for nonprofits.
- Experience with Gusto, Dext, Bill.com, Neon, and/or OS Media.
Compensation and Benefits
This is a fully remote 40 hour per week position with a salary range of $50,000 - $70,000. Benefits include employer match for simple IRA contributions, health/vision/dental insurance and basic life insurance.
