Job Description
The NYC District Office of a progressive New York State legislator is seeking a Community and Constituent Liaison to play a leading role in maintaining the office’s strong relations with the residents across the district. The role includes engaging with community members and organizations to identify community concerns and implement solutions. In addition, the position involves working with individual constituents to resolve a broad range of issues, challenges, and concerns. The ideal candidate will be resourceful, a creative thinker, and committed to improving the lives of individuals and communities.
Responsibilities include:
- Engaging with community organizations, leaders, and advocates to identify local needs, develop deep understanding of issues, and implement solutions
- Developing strong relationships with other elected offices, government agencies, and local organizations to assist and respond to local needs and concerns
- Representing the Assembly member at meetings and events, including Community Boards, district events, stakeholder meetings, and more, including some nights and weekends
- Leading the planning, organization, and operations of office-run events
- Managing daily calls from constituents, including ongoing case management to resolve concerns, connect them to resources, and coordinate with relevant private actors or public agencies
- Assisting constituents navigating concerns ranging from social services, education issues, and unemployment concerns to senior issues, health care questions, and more.
The ideal candidate will be highly motivated to make a positive difference in the community. They will be an excellent listener, a skilled communicator, attentive to details, and have strong problem-solving skills, as well as strong interpersonal skills and an ability to engage with constituents from a wide variety of backgrounds.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Interest in local government, politics, and local issues
- Commitment to improving lives of individuals through case work and assistance
- Experience in constituent services or other public facing case work role a plus
- Experience in a local, state or federal government office is a plus
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills to respectfully engage with constituents from diverse backgrounds
- Highly organized and attention to detail
- Exceptional problem-solving skills and creative thinking skills
