The McCain Institute seeks a full-time Director of Major Events. The Director of Major Events will lead the development and implementation of all McCain Institute major events. The Director will work closely with, and report to, the Senior Director of Communications and Strategic Engagement at the McCain Institute.


The Director ensures the successful planning, execution, and post-event analysis of major events including conceptualizing agendas, engaging speakers, and overseeing consultants, logistics, budget, and vendors.


One of the most important duties of the Director of Major Events is leading and directing the coordination and execution of the yearly Sedona Forum. The Sedona Forum is the McCain Institute's signature annual event, bringing together leaders from across the United States and around the globe. It serves as a high-level gathering aimed at discussing and addressing key global issues. The Sedona Forum also plays a crucial role in the Institute’s media, fundraising, and donor engagement efforts.


This position is based in Washington, D.C. and is eligible for a hybrid work schedule.

Essential Duties

  • With the Senior Director of Communications and Strategic Engagement, develop and implement a comprehensive major events strategy to support the McCain Institute’s mission and vision and communications objectives.
  • Develop, review, and present detailed planning documents to McCain Institute leadership for all major events.
  • Oversee planning and execution of the Sedona Forum, including managing event consultants and vendors, ensuring efficient and effective coordination and execution.
  • Coordinate with the Senior Director of Communications and Strategic Engagement on communications and media goals for major events.
  • Examine all contracts and agreements to ensure competitiveness, identify potential cost savings, and make necessary adjustments.
  • Create and manage the Major Events budget, including proposing the budget, managing expenses, and overseeing the reconciliation of expenses.
  • Develop and implement event staffing plans and timelines in collaboration with the Senior Director of Communications and Strategic Engagement.
  • Conduct thorough post-event reviews and submit comprehensive written reports with updated timelines and recommendations for future events, including the next Sedona Forum.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND eight (8) years of related administrative experience, which includes five (5) years of supervisory experience; OR, Twelve (12) years of related administrative experience, which includes five (5) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Detail-oriented with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Experience in fundraising and donor engagement is a plus.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse. 
  • Visual acuity and manual dexterity associated with daily use of desktop computer, bending, stooping, reaching, and lifting up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties.
  • Regular activities require the ability to quickly set and change priorities which may include and/or are subject to the resolution of conflicts.
