Job Description
A Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation business is seeking a Communications Associate. The mission of our organization is to increase the number of 100+ book homes for kids 0-18 in NYC. Our team provides access to and ownership of books, builds community, and creates a passion for learning through free events and literacy-based community programming.
This role will include internal and external communications efforts, shaping and maintaining the organization’s brand, messaging, and public image. The ideal candidate is a strong writer, highly organized, and passionate about storytelling and engagement across various media channels. Attention to detail, visual communication, and a strong sense of graphic design are also crucial for this role. Reporting to the Executive Director, the candidate will play a key role in supporting a rapidly growing nonprofit organization.
Key Responsibilities to Include:
● Content Creation: Develop and edit engaging content for press releases, newsletters, blogs, social media, and internal communications. Create one-sheets, overviews, and promotional materials that highlight key achievements and communicate the organization’s mission.
● Social Media Management: Create, curate, and schedule posts across platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
● Media Relations: Monitor and support media outreach efforts, including drafting press materials and maintaining relationships with journalists and influencers.
● Internal Communications: Craft employee communications, ensuring consistency in messaging and branding.
● Event Support: Conduct outreach and promotion of events,
● Brand Management: Ensure all communication materials align with the company’s branding and voice. Keep style guides up-to-date and consistent.
● Research & Reporting: Monitor media coverage, industry trends, and communication metrics to optimize engagement strategies.
● Project Planning: Coordinate and manage communications-related projects, setting timelines, tracking progress, and ensuring deadlines are met. Work collaboratively to ensure alignment across different initiatives and campaigns.
● Stakeholder Coordination: Collaborate cross-functionally with teams to align messaging and deliver strategic communications.
Qualifications & Skills:
● Writing & Editing: Strong writing, proofreading, and storytelling skills.
● Digital & Social Media: Proficiency with social media management tools and digital marketing strategies.
● Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple projects with attention to detail and deadlines. Collaboration: Team player with a passion for BBB’s mission, strong interpersonal skills, and ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
● Tech-Savviness: Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and experience with design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Suite, InDesign) is a plus
● Commitment to Learning: A desire for continuous improvement and professional development.
● Education & Experience: Minimum of two years of similar work experience and an undergraduate degree, with coursework and/or work experience in communications, PR, marketing, journalism, graphic design, or a similar field.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $25.00 per hour
Expected hours: 20 per week
