Our nonprofit client, Rafiki Coalition for Health and Wellness (RCHW), seeks a visionary, highly collaborative, diplomatic leader with a deep commitment to providing high-quality health and wellness services to San Francisco’s Black residents and other marginalized communities.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) will provide overall leadership in the planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of all departments while overseeing governance, directly supervising department heads, and supporting organizational development.

The ED will represent RCHW in local, regional, state, and national communities, promoting organizational and field innovations. ABOUT RAFIKI COALITION FOR HEALTH AND WELLNESS (RCHW)

RCHW’s mission is to eliminate health inequities in San Francisco’s Black and marginalized communities through education, advocacy, and by providing holistic health and wellness services in a culturally affirming environment. RCHW strives to achieve its focus by providing health and wellness services including health education, movement classes, health screenings, advocacy, transitional housing and case management services for people living with HIV/AIDS, trauma resiliency and mental health circles, and other health-promoting activities.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY 

The Board seeks a bold and visionary leader to build the agency’s future, predicated upon RCHW’s commitment to health equity. The leadership of a new ED will help lay the foundation for RCHW’s next 30 years.

This is a hybrid role, with 3 days a week in RCHW's San Francisco office.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Organizational Leadership & Management

  • Provide vision, motivation and leadership to all agency employees.
  • Lead, coach, develop and retain RCHW’s staff through implementing human resources processes and ensuring they align with best practices.
  • Ensure that the values of RCHW are practiced throughout the organization’s operations and programs and ensure that employees are engaged in meaningful work to promote health equity and social justice.
  • Work collaboratively with RCHW’s leadership team valuing the ideas, suggestions, and innovations in achieving program goals and objectives
  • Ensure that all programs and services have operational systems that are developed and conducted in accordance with best practices in the health and wellness field.
  • Encourage and support professional development opportunities.

Operational Management 

  • Ensure that planning and development of programs and services support implementation of goals and strategies.
  • Ensure regular program assessment and annual agency-wide evaluations are conducted and lead to program administrative improvement and goal attainment.
  • Ensure that all operational support systems are well developed and functioning
  • Ensure that systems are in place to support compliance across grant, contract, and state and local licensing requirements and guidance.

Program Oversight & Development

  • Provide effective management and team-building support to develop the program department, the mental health clinic, and Brandy Morehouse team.
  • Work with the Development Director and other departments to provide regular program reporting, metrics, and communications
  • Oversee the implementation of the Umoja Health Access Point and manage key stakeholder relationships
  • Build the Community Research Department to serve as the education and advocacy arm of RCHW 

Advocacy, Communications and Public Relations 

  • Be an effective advocate of the mission and values of RCHW, advocating for quality health & wellness services and program funding to address the needs and hopes of the clients served by Rafiki.
  • Represent RCHW in local, state, regional, and national planning communities, conferences, and other field-building and partnership convenings and tables including formal presentations to staff, funders, community, and other partners.
  • Ensure optimum flow of communication among decision makers and key constituencies including all levels of staff, clients, community leaders, and service providers effectively managing frequent contact across mediums to exchange information
  • Collaboratively create compelling written correspondence, memos, and grant application materials to disseminate general information and generate revenue.
  • Be a conduit for input and information and promote innovations for health equity at all levels

Strategic Development, Implementation & Fiscal Responsibility

  • Work with the Board, Development Director, and staff teams to devise and implement an annual development plan and create effective strategies to ensure substantial growth in organizational fundraising and increase financial diversification and sustainability.
  • Manage creation, implementation, and evolution of RCHW’s strategic plan and annual business plans
  • Supervise and ensure fiscal soundness and stability, including overseeing fiscal management and compliance and financial accountability and reporting.
  • Achieve annual fundraising metrics set in partnership with the Board and Development Director.
  • Foster positive relationships with existing donors
  • Expand RCHW’s donor base and diversify funding streams
  • Broaden and deepen relationships with foundations and other non-governmental funders and donors.
  • Oversee grant management and supervision of Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for local, state, and federal agencies and private entities including foundations.
  • Serve as RCHW’s primary liaison with local, state, and federal grantors as well as private grantors.
  • Oversee financial assets and planning, development of budgets, and compliance with grant and contract requirements and accounting principles.

Board & External Relations

  • Partner with and support the effectiveness and development of the Board of Directors in their roles of governance, strategic direction, and advocacy, through regular meetings, individual relationship-building, and opportunities for learning about and engaging with RCHW’s programs and constituents.
  • Serve as primary liaison between the Board of Directors and staff, including regularly reporting on the organization’s operations, fiscal health, and strategic issues.
  • Advocate for the organization and field as a spokesperson
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with partner organizations and key constituent groups through direct contact and collaborative partnerships.

Desired Experience & Skills:

  • The ED will be a proven leader, coach, and relationship manager who has demonstrated success in leading organizations through exploitational growth and sustainability. 
  • At least 15 years of progressively responsible experience in non-profit, human service, or related organizations inclusive of program, finance, and human resources management with experience in the public health field. 
  • Working knowledge of local community needs and resources and direct experience working effectively in community-based cross-cultural settings.
  • Strong leadership and management skills with a minimum of 10 years of people, departmental, or organizational experience
  • Ability to attract, manage, develop, and coach a high-performing team.
  • Experience applying principles of leadership and management in daily practice promoting sound organizational and management innovations.
  • Substantial decision-making in the execution of program delivery in complex organizations such as those with multiple programs and/or sites.
  • Familiarity and comfort with raising funds from key funding sources such as state, county, and city government grants as well as foundation grants.
  • Demonstrated diplomacy, emotional intelligence, and relationship-building skills.
  • Able to act quickly in emergency situations with experience in crisis management
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health or related field preferred
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills
  • Must live in the San Francisco Bay Area or be willing to move

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS: The anticipated annual compensation range for this role is $200,000-$225,000, commensurate with experience. A generous benefits package with health insurance, retirement plan, paid time off, and holidays is also offered.
