Compensation: $62,000 - $68,000

Benefits:         40 hours PTO after 90 days employment, up to 80 hours start of year two; potential merit-based bonus; monthly wellness stipend

BrightSide Animal Center was founded in 1987 and has expanded since its inception to meet the needs of a quickly growing community. A special rebranding and outreach campaign in 2013 put BrightSide on the map in greater Central Oregon as a shelter deeply committed to both animals and the local community.

BrightSide Animal Center is a high-save shelter with a 98% save rate, one of the highest in the country. BrightSide seeks a creative, positive, enthusiastic, and outgoing professional to join their team as a Development Manager. Spearheading all aspects of Development, BrightSide knows the right candidate enjoys interacting with donors, the board of directors, foundation and corporate partners, and community leaders. The Development Manager works closely with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors to lead the organization’s fundraising. The Development Manager is responsible for planning, implementing, managing, and overseeing all development activities, including donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individual and major gifts; spearheading an annual giving campaign and any special or capital campaigns; identifying foundation, corporate and government grant prospects and managing all aspects of grants management from planning to submission to reporting; event planning and execution; management of the organization’s endowment, and supervision of development-focused volunteers, contractors and vendors as needed.

BrightSide’s Development Manager will work to grow existing relationships with a substantial list of existing donors, sponsors, and partners, while also expanding prospects, cultivating new relationships, and developing creative solutions to reach prospective donors and funders. The Manager will also amplify the organization’s impact among both current and new donors and funders, and across the community at large.

The Manager, in partnership with the Executive Director, will also oversee the business operations of the department, including developing and administering operating and capital budgets as they relate to unearned income; supporting all aspects of moves management including maintaining the database; working alongside program staff and leadership to plan and execute grant requests of all types; participating on and coordinating with board and designated fund development and similar committees; overseeing cross- and inter-departmental communications; and managing campaign design and implementation including direct mail, events, and social and traditional media.

Qualifying candidates should have excellent written and verbal communication skills and be effective at developing and delivering presentations, letters, and engagement campaigns for a variety of audiences. The Development Manager reports to the Executive Director, and works collaboratively with the board, staff, administration, and volunteers.

Position Details

General Fundraising:

●      Strategic planning for all fundraising activities, as well as program development, implementation, and oversight as it relates to funder and donor deliverables and interests.

●      Collaborate and communicate with BrightSide Animal Center’s board, leadership and volunteers to achieve department goals.

●      Support all grant-seeking and grants management duties ranging from identifying funders to ensuring alignment of values to writing requests and managing awards.

●      Ensure all funders receive timely and accurate interim and final reporting as per individual funder protocols and best practices in general.

●      Serve as project manager for restricted funds as needed.

●      Collaborate with other staff members and volunteers and provide support as needed on public funding opportunities.

●      Manage and direct development volunteers by providing regular feedback and coaching to ensure confidence and efficacy.


Donor & Database Management:

●      Develop and maintain relationships with members, donors, foundations, corporations, community organizations, and community members.

●      Solicit and secure major gifts to fund BrightSide’s programs, services, and capital needs.

●      Manage and maintain the fundraising database, ensuring confidentiality, accuracy, and timely entry of donor records.

●      Direct the timely and accurate response to donor requests, inquiries and gifts including receipts, acknowledgements and special correspondence.

●      Develop and implement acquisition, retention, and growth strategies for an aggressive direct mail/email marketing program for donors and prospects. 

●      Manage and develop individual benefactors and major gift campaigns, including identifying and soliciting new potential donors and planned giving prospects.

●      Maintain a portfolio of major donors with revenue goals and contact metrics.

Marketing and Events:

●      Oversee social media and online promotion related to formal and information campaigns, special events, and donation- or funding-focused partnerships.

●      Support consistency in general messaging, branding and marketing to strategically align with and honor donor and funder preferences, areas of focus, past relationships, and to further current and future goals.

●      Plan the strategy for and oversee the implementation and coordination of an annual fundraising event and smaller events as capacity and strategy dictate.  


Board of Directors & Management Team:

●      Track and report the results of all fundraising efforts to the Board of Directors.

●      Attend and present a summary of activity at monthly board meetings and attend other meetings as required.

●      Serve as a member of the management team, working with the Executive Director and all directors to provide input, suggestions, and recommendations for organizational excellence and growth.

  

Candidate Qualifications

Required Qualifications

●      Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred, or equivalent work experience.

●      Strong verbal communications skills and demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively.

●      Demonstrated ability to engage and inspire a wide range of stakeholders.

●      Thorough understanding of strategic development with a track record of creating and implementing innovative solutions to meet pressing organizational needs.

●      Experience working with a board of directors as a partner in organizational advancement.

●      Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel, Publisher) and Google (Drive, email, sheets, docs, forms)

●      Ability to travel to meet with donors and prospective donors throughout Central Oregon.

 

The ideal candidate will:

●      Have no less than three years of nonprofit fundraising experience.

●      Demonstrated track record of leading substantial revenue growth in a nonprofit organization.

●      Possess an ability to think analytically and problem solve, combined with a willingness to ask questions and work collaboratively.

 

Physical Demands & Work Environment

This position works standard business hours: M-F 9 am – 5 pm with the potential for some remote work. This position requires occasional evening and weekend attendance at donor functions.

Work is performed in an office environment within an animal shelter. Because of this, there may be occasional wet floors, animal noises, odors, and dander.

This position requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and sit.
