The Role
Moderna is seeking a strategic and creative VP, Global Communications and Media, to join our growing Brand & Corporate Affairs team. You will be the key partner for our Infectious Disease franchise, working with R&D, Manufacturing and our Commercial & Medical organizations, and you will strengthen Moderna’s communications around the globe by developing and executing a robust Communications strategy to support those functions.
This role will engage directly with business, science, development and technology leaders throughout the organization – in addition to external stakeholders. We are seeking a candidate who is highly collaborative and ready for the next step in their career, can thrive in a fast-paced and highly creative environment, while also being self-motivated and able to work independently. This individual will be highly curious and energized by working in an area of emerging science, medicine and technology and thrive on helping a company tell a complex story externally in a compelling way.
They will have excellent written and verbal communications skills; be fluent in social and digital communications engagement and strategy; have experience working with top-tier media (ideally in the healthcare space); and be comfortable working with corporate and program teams across a complex organization and multiple global sites. This person will lead communicating about our platform across all aspects of infectious disease from R&D to commercial products including our respiratory portfolio and latent infectious disease vaccines in development. This person will also incorporate corporate news, and will help drive awareness of our commitment to corporate social responsibility. The individual will also be highly skilled in managing complex global issues with potential impact on Moderna’s corporate reputation. It also is critical that this individual identify and facilitate local insights into local, regional and global communications planning, while managing a diverse set of internal and external stakeholders. The VP, Global Communications and Media will be highly skilled in managing highly fluid, complex situations of the utmost sensitivity. By leading Global Communications in Infectious Disease, the role will have responsibility for actively engaging with local communications teams and public relations agencies that are at the forefront of Moderna’s efforts locally and regionally. This individual will also regularly interface with and support General Managers, company executives, key business partners (within R&D and Commercial & Medical) with global communications needs. It is imperative that this individual exercise flawless judgment and operate with boldness, responsibility and urgency at all times.
The role will be based Cambridge, MA with global travel and report to the Chief Brand Officer.
Here’s What You’ll Do
Serve as the primary Communications point of contact for the Chief Commercial Officer and their leadership team
Serve as point of contact for the Infectious Disease Medical Affairs and R&D teams
Increase awareness of Moderna’s leadership in mRNA science, platform, pipeline, technology and commitment to citizenship
Create and execute communication strategies that align with the corporate and regional business objectives and reinforce the reputation and employer branding of Moderna across the globe
Support major company announcements by developing operational plans that amplify the impact globally
Develop creative communications campaigns that cut through the clutter and differentiate Moderna
Prepare executives and leaders across the company for highly visible regional and local media and stakeholder engagements
Support senior leaders with considered counsel on reputation related matters and leading issues preparations and response
Identify and maintain working relationships with key journalists, bloggers, government officials, regional stakeholders etc., and act as a first point of contact and spokesperson for local media inquiries
Ensure on-time delivery of regional media monitoring, key message development and company press events – working in partnership with local market leaders where appropriate
Manage public relations agency on a global level, partnering closely with in-market communicators to drive cohesive and aggressive media plan
Work with the team and its agency partners to develop and execute digital and social media plans
Keep management updated on breaking industry or company-specific news
Partner with key industry, technology, business partners and strategic collaborators in developing opportunities for joint engagement
As needed, help support town halls and other internal external programs and employee initiatives
Create, design and implement global media events that facilitate dialogue between the company, its leaders and external stakeholders
Additional duties as may be assigned from time to time
Here’s What You’ll Need (Minimum Qualifications)
A university degree in a relevant field of study, such as communications, journalism, political science etc.
15+ years of experience working experience in global roles related to communications in relation to e.g. business, trade associations
An understanding of the drug development process and biopharma space
Experience and ability to work within all local laws, regulations, including internal compliance
Here’s What You’ll Need (Preferred Qualifications)
Prior experience working on infectious disease, ideally in vaccines, is preferred
Genuine interest in media relations, social media and commitment to staying current on healthcare news
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Strong interpersonal skills & relationship-builder, including media relationships
Track record of quick follow up with others
A high level of initiative, a strong work ethic, creativity and the ability to balance multiple assignments
Ability to develop trusted relationships and engage with senior leaders as well as the confidence to coach them in a candid manner
A collaborative, solution-oriented and problem-solving approach to challenges as well as being open-minded to new ideas and approaches
Team player – both with internal colleagues and agency partners
Ability to be flexible and work well under pressure with minimal supervision
