Position Description

The project coordinator will work to educate residents and local groups about the benefits of community composting and support the construction of compost bins to divert as much biodegradable waste away from landfills as possible. Our goal is to build at least 50 bins in each community and connect neighbors to each other to support the project. We seek to create a network where residents will safely and effectively divert kitchen and yard waste by maintaining compost piles in their yards or at a community compost site. The project coordinator will conduct outreach in neighborhoods to find interested people, hold public education meetings, and provide materials to build compost systems in communities that don’t currently have access to municipal composting. Project responsibilities may change over time.
Responsibilities:
- Implement a community outreach and engagement plan to engage residents and community stakeholders in the community composting project, including activities such as organizing events, tabling at community events, and knocking doors
- Educate the public, including residents and local groups, about the basics of composting through one-on-one conversations and hands-on community workshops
- Assist residents in setting up and maintaining safe, durable, and animal-resistant compost bins
- Connect people who may have barriers to participation in the project (e.g., access to land for composting, a disability, etc)
- Prepare educational resources about composting and promotional materials about upcoming community meetings (e.g., webinars, fact sheets, flyers)
Qualifications:
- Previous experience in community outreach and education programs, community organizing, advocacy campaigns, teaching, or work that required similar skills is preferred, but not required
- Knowledge of community assets and concerns in Clairton, Braddock, and Swissvale
- Ability to communicate effectively with different communities and people with a diversity of backgrounds
- Excellent written and oral communications skills
