Job Description
The Role:
AAPIP seeks a visionary and collaborative President and CEO (“CEO”) to lead the organization in developing and executing its next strategic plan in its highest call to action – actualize its mission to mobilize and expand philanthropic and community resources for underserved AANHPI communities. In addition, the CEO leads and cultivates AAPIP’s organizational culture, oversees operations in partnership with national staff, and guides advocacy efforts, which promote equity and justice in philanthropy. The CEO oversees programs, including community philanthropy initiatives, research reports, advocacy projects, and national convenings.
The President and CEO serves as the public face of AAPIP, representing the organization to funders, policymakers, members, and community leaders. The CEO works closely with the board of directors, staff, and chapter leadership, developing and implementing strategies that support and actualize AAPIP’s mission. Importantly, the CEO provides hands-on management and administration of the organization, fundraising, resource development, and support of the efficacy and impact of national staff’s work.
This is a position of transformative executive leadership of an iconic, highly respected justice minded organization at a pivotal moment in its history. With a strong foundation built over three decades, AAPIP is poised for growth and innovation, with the ability to drive impactful change within AANHPI communities nationally, in racial solidarity with otherized communities, particularly the intersection of anti-Asian and anti-Black racism, and across the philanthropic landscape. With a strong supportive Board, dedicated national staff, co-chair leaders from AAPIP’s eleven chapters, and a broad network of committed members, the new CEO shapes the future of AAPIP and helps accelerate the role of philanthropy in advancing equity, racial solidarity, and social justice for AANHPI communities.
The ideal candidate brings at least ten (10) years of relevant experience, which includes a minimum of five (5) years in leadership roles (VP-/C-level) within the philanthropic, nonprofit or social justice sectors, with a proven track record of strategic leadership, fundraising, and advocacy.

Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership:
- In partnership with the Board, define, inspire, and deliver the organization’s vision and mission; refine and communicate the strategic direction, goals, and decisions to all stakeholders internally and externally ensuring alignment with the needs and priorities of AANHPI communities, including catalyzing the current strategic planning process.
- Work closely with the board of directors on board development, recruiting in support of diverse representation and culture.
- Represent AAPIP’s unique role in the philanthropic landscape and its priority actions, particularly in a time of racial reckoning.
Equity and Justice:
- Lead initiatives that promote equity and justice for AANHPI communities (and in racial solidarity with other BIPOC communities) within the philanthropic sector and broader society, addressing systemic issues and working towards inclusive practices in philanthropy.
- Collaborate and develop new relationships with ally organizations to advance shared goals, while demonstrating solidarity with other marginalized groups and supporting cross-community initiatives.
Mobilizing Philanthropic and Community Resources:
- Develop and implement fundraising strategies for AAPIP’s programs and initiatives. Cultivate new and steward existing relationships with donors, foundations, corporate partners, as well as AANHPI community organizations nationally, leaders, and community members, exploring new funding mechanisms, models, and partnerships.
Advocacy:
- Lead advocacy efforts for education, resources, and initiatives, at local, state, and national levels, influencing policy changes that benefit AANHPI communities nationally as well as advocating in spaces within progressive philanthropy.
- Serve as the primary spokesperson for AAPIP at events, conferences, and public forums, engaging with media and public relations efforts raising awareness of AAPIP’s mission and impact.
Operations and People Management:
- Oversee optimized and transparent operations, including program implementation, financial management, and administrative functions.
- Lead, inspire, mentor, retain, and manage staff, fostering a productive work culture, valuing accountability.
- Provide requested infrastructure support to Chapters, ensuring alignment with national priorities while promoting effectiveness and impact as local philanthropic leaders.
- Lead stabilizing and healing culture, systems, and presence across all areas of executive leadership and management, including staff morale and engagement with chapter co-chairs.
The Person
The next President and CEO ideally will bring the following qualifications:
Deep Knowledge of the AANHPI Community:
- A deep understanding of the cultural, social, economic, and political dynamics and complexities affecting diverse AANHPI communities, with the ability to effectively navigate these dynamics and complexities.
- Track record of working effectively with colleagues in affinity spaces, engaging in meaningful conversations on racial and cultural issues, and mobilizing resources to address needs and challenges.
- Demonstrated commitment to AANHPI communities, including lived experience and deep connections to these communities, are invaluable to this role, ensuring leadership of AAPIP is rooted in authentic, community-driven action, and advocacy.
Leadership and Strategic Vision:
- Proven leadership abilities, preferably within the philanthropic, nonprofit and/or social justice sectors, including strategic planning, organizational management, as well as inspiring and motivating people management.
- Demonstrated storytelling capabilities to communicate shifting narratives within philanthropy, emphasizing the importance of AANHPI communities.
- Demonstrated partnership with and support of a committed board of directors, including engaging and challenging (when necessary) them, ensuring open communication, strategic alignment, and effective governance practices.
Experience in Philanthropy and Community Engagement:
- Substantial knowledge of the philanthropic landscape and relationships with philanthropic partners, including experience with fundraising, grantmaking, and donor relations.
- Proven track record in cultivating donor relationships, mobilizing resources, and building long-term partnerships based on understanding donors needs and meaningful conversations with philanthropic leaders.
- Track record of developing compelling strong narratives regarding collective strategic work with philanthropic and community leaders.
Operational Management Skills:
- Proven managerial excellence in effective organizational development and nonprofit management, including fiscal operations and ensuring transparency; able to navigate the complexities of grassroots initiatives and high-level strategic planning.
- Ability to bring stability in a period of transition and strengthen infrastructure and operational effectiveness.
- Experience in managing diverse (including cross generational) teams, fostering an inclusive workplace environment and culture. Effective management of non-traditional work styles including virtual teams.
- Experience effectively leading, and meeting the challenges of, multi-chapter organizations.
Advocacy and Policy Expertise:
- Deep experience in advocacy that supports AANHPI communities, representing AAPIP by engaging in policy work in public forums and with policymakers, at the local, state, and national levels.
- Experience in coalition-building to advance common goals with the ability to lead initiatives that promote equity and justice within the philanthropic sector and broader society.
Commitment to Equity and Justice:
- Demonstrated commitment to advancing DEJIB (diversity, equity and justice, inclusion, and belonging) work is essential, with attention to self-reflection, repair, and future-focused thinking.
- Willingness to take courageous steps in advocating for systemic change in philanthropy to address deeper societal issues, while ensuring AAPIP’s strong voice, advocating for racial equity and justice, in community and philanthropic sectors.
Interpersonal and Communication Skills:
- Excellent communication skills, able to articulate their personal relationship with AAPIP's mission and vision to a wide range of audiences, including donors, funders, partners, peer leaders, and the media.
- Demonstrated highly relational skills and aptitude with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated high emotional intelligence, thoughtful and action-oriented, with energy, a sense of humor, and a containable ego.
Education:
- A bachelor’s degree is required. An advanced degree (masters, JD, PhD) in a related field, which can provide a deeper understanding of complex issues in philanthropy, social justice, and leadership is preferred, but not required.
Compensation:
- The salary range for this position is $225,000-$275,000. The exact offer will be determined by a variety of factors such as the candidate’s individual skills, qualifications, and experience relative to the requirements of the role. In addition to salary, this position includes a comprehensive benefits package.
