New Yorkers United for Child Care is a new organization committed to achieving universal child care for all families with children under 5 in New York City and State. Our strategy centers on community organizing, as we believe building the power of parents and prospective parents is key to securing victories for families.


We are hiring for a Senior Organizer. This individual will be our second full-time team member, joining the executive director to build the organization. They will help expand our city-wide membership of over 50 grassroots leaders and grow our presence in key neighborhoods.

We seek a self-motivated, outgoing Senior Organizer to develop our organizing structure, conduct outreach, and lead base building, training, education, and leadership development among parents and prospective parents in New York. This role involves engaging members in city and state campaigns and coalitions related to our mission. The Senior Organizer will also facilitate neighborhood and city-wide in-person meetings on weekends—when parents are available—ensure child care options are provided, and implement ongoing leadership development training throughout the year.

Key Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of the Senior Organizer include but are not limited to: 

  •  Base building - organize and establish a canvass operation to build out individual contacts of New Yorkers (primarily parents and would-be parents) wherever they are (at playgrounds, grocery stores, subways, etc.) who we can then engage as leaders.
  •   Leadership Development - regularly hold one-on-one meetings with members to develop their investment in the organization and our mission, retain and engage current leadership, and ensure their ideas and concerns are incorporated into our work.
  • Organize and facilitate monthly neighborhood and city-wide membership meetings on weekends .These meetings are opportunities for members to learn about local political processes, how to win, connect to local representatives, and engage in strategic brainstorming
  • Coordinate child care for members to participate in events
  • Coordinate community and press events and connect grassroots members with reporters
  • Meet with elected officials and train and recruit leaders to effectively participate in these meetings
  • Create promotional and educational materials
  • Actively participate in organizational planning with the Executive Director


Skills, Abilities & Qualifications:

  • 5 years previous experience working as a community organizer, or similar experience
  • Strong interest in building power among New Yorkers to fight for a more livable and affordable city and state.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Outgoing personality and ability to work with people from a variety of backgrounds.
  •  Excellent organizational skills with ability to manage diverse projects simultaneously.
  • Positive, proactive and personable team player. 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team. 
  • Comfort with social media and digital communication is preferred.


Note that this position will be following a hybrid work schedule. Applicants must have the ability to commute to our office in Lower Manhattan, as well as travel throughout New York City during business hours, evenings and weekends, and occasionally to Albany. In the event of weekend work, we are committed to ensuring employees have two days off per week
