ABOUT THE POSITION
The Marketing and Communications Manager will primarily oversee the overall strategy and day-to-day management of the United Ways of California’s (UWCA) social media channels and email marketing systems, support in-house Spanish translation and ensure content is accurate and culturally appropriate, and collaborate to improve analytics, reporting, and cross-organizational digital marketing efforts.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Integrated Communications Strategy
- Collaborate with the team to develop clear communications objectives and methods for measuring qualitative and quantitative communications outcomes.
- Develop a contextual understanding of the organization’s core programs and advocacy priorities and apply this knowledge to recommend strategies and tactics that advance the organization’s communications efforts; collaborate with the communications team to create multi-channel programmatic and issue-based communications strategies.
- Support the streamlining of communications best practices, including helping create internal organizational guides, tools, and resources.
- Help identify collaboration opportunities with local California United Ways; support strengthening systems of sharing communications best practices across the network and communications channels.
- Help identify and implement equity and inclusion best practices (Including accessibility and translation).
Social Media Strategy and Management
- Manage daily operations of all social media accounts, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube; schedule and post content consistently using Sprout Social, ensuring optimal timing for audience engagement.
- Monitor trends and provide recommendations for new approaches and expansion into additional platforms, as appropriate.
- Develop channel and audience-appropriate content; craft and implement targeted social media strategy to drive organizational awareness and program participation.
- Collaborate with programs, policy, and communications teams to create monthly social media calendars aligned with programmatic dates, legislative timelines, monthly themes, and other organizational content strategy.
- Collaborate with team members and partners to gather community stories, testimonials, and updates to share on social platforms.
- Keep up to date on California issues to ensure social media content is timely, responsive, and appropriately relevant to and reflective of the state’s current political and economic climate.
- Facilitate the growth of our online community; engage with relevant communities, partner and mission-aligned organizations, and on relevant issue areas to expand reach and impact.
- Foster relationships with followers by responding to comments, messages, and inquiries in a timely manner, in both English and Spanish.
- Collaborate with the Brand Manager for graphic design and toolkit creation needs; support toolkit implementation within Social Press Kit, as needed.
- Make recommendations for sharing social media best practices and tools with community ambassadors, partner organizations, staff, and volunteers.
- Support staff with creative development and alignment of paid social media ad campaigns with organic or boosted content; internally run and monitor campaigns, manage ad budgets, as needed.
Digital Marketing and Analytics Support
- Assist with implementation of communications strategies; support in managing vendors, advertising, and digital marketing projects, as needed.
- Manage email marketing systems; format emails to ensure visually appealing and effective communication, collaborate with team members to coordinate timely email sends, optimizing engagement and response rates.
- Support list management; manage and segment email lists to improve targeting, maintain database health, and ensure compliance with privacy regulations.
- Identify opportunities to optimize email campaigns; leverage automation tools, analyze performance data, and conduct A/B testing, as needed.
- Set up systems to track and analyze performance metrics across social media and email platforms; develop insights and recommendations to inform future strategies.
- Coordinate with the team to create streamlined dashboards and hubs for storing and viewing communications systems data, as needed.
- Utilize Google Analytics to track website traffic and user behavior, providing actionable insights, as needed.
- Share communications outcomes across the organization, including providing information for monthly grant reporting, as needed.
Spanish Translation Oversight
- Translate and adapt communications materials (e.g., newsletters, social media posts, website content) into Spanish to ensure accessibility for diverse audiences.
- Review and edit translated content to ensure accuracy, cultural relevance, and adherence to organizational tone and style.
- Collaborate with team members to maintain consistent messaging across languages.
- Develop and implement efficient processes for translating and localizing content to improve workflow and turnaround times.
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Education And Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher in marketing, communications, graphic design, journalism, public relations, public policy, social work, nonprofit management, or related field preferred but not required.
- Minimum of 5 years of related experience in social media management or digital marketing/communications (lived experiences may also be considered); prior nonprofit industry experience or relevant field is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with producing timely and effective written communications pieces; experience with writing for digital, web-based platforms preferred.
- Strong understanding of digital marketing tools and techniques.
- Tech savvy and quick to adapt new programs; familiarity with using Slack, Zoom, Canva, Google Drive, and Dropbox.
- Experience working with low-income, diverse communities, with a commitment to racial and economic justice, a plus.
Skills And Qualifications
- Sharp verbal and written communication skills; comfortability in communicating with partners and working directly with members of the public.
- Bilingual—fluent in Spanish and experience communicating with external audiences in Spanish (written and verbal) required.
- Strategic mindset and excellent planning skills, with an ability to plan and devise appropriate program strategies.
- Strong project management skills and ability to multitask under deadlines. Ability to efficiently and independently manage time and workload.
- Ability to support implementation and evaluation of marketing campaigns.
- Proven track record of the ability to form strategic relationships with partners and stakeholders.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills and emotional intelligence, and ability to work collaboratively with many stakeholders.
- Ability to think and work independently, and do so diligently in a virtual office environment, to think creatively to solve problems with limited oversight, excellent judgment and problem-solving ability.
Other Requirements and Preferences
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Ability to travel periodically across California for in-person meetings, if necessary (reimbursements for travel costs provided).
Location
United Ways of California is a virtual office space. The Marketing and Communications Manager can be located anywhere within the state of California, but Bay Area, Sacramento, or Los Angeles is preferred.
