Copy Editor for UFT Communications Department

The UFT Graphics Department, in collaboration with the UFT Communications Department, produces booklets, fliers, programs, brochures, ads, PowerPoint presentations, posters, social media graphics and a wide array of other print and digital material to promote events and initiatives, inform the union’s members about their rights and benefits, and engage them in the union’s campaigns. The UFT Communications Department seeks a copy editor to work primarily with the Graphics Department to ensure that these materials are clear, accurate, concise and consistent with the union’s house style. The copy editor will also oversee the publication of the union’s annual Welfare Fund benefits supplement and will write or update the Know Your Rights, Know Your Benefits and Your Well Being columns in the union’s bimonthly newspaper. We are looking for a seasoned communications professional who has exemplary writing, copy editing and proofreading skills and has experience navigating a fast-paced editorial environment.

Responsibilities

• Conceptualize, write and/or copy edit event programs, brochures, fliers, booklets and other print and digital material created by the union’s in-house Graphics Department.

• Serve as the editor of the UFT Welfare Fund health benefits supplement in the September issue of the New York Teacher.

• Write or update the Know Your Rights, Know Your Benefits and Your Well-Being columns in the New York Teacher and write occasional informational articles for the newspaper and member tributes for the UFT Honors website.

• Proofread union testimony, press releases and other union communications as assigned by the department director.

• Provide editorial support for new digital initiatives.

• Contribute to other member communications initiatives as needed.

Qualifications

• Top-notch writing, editing and proofreading skills. Familiarity with AP style a plus.

• A track record of copy editing a range of editorial materials generated by an organization.

• Demonstrated experience with digital communications.

• The people skills to work well with others in a large and diverse organization.

• Attention to detail and ability to calmly juggle multiple tasks in a fast-paced work environment.

Experience/Education

● A bachelor’s degree in the liberal arts; a master’s degree preferred.

● Five-plus years of relevant work experience.

● An interest in public education and the labor movement.

Salary $75,000–$90,000 depending on experience. A defined-benefit pension, health and other excellent benefits. Equal opportunity employer. In-person work at least three days a week at the union’s lower Manhattan
