Job Description

Taxpayers for Common Sense (TCS) seeks a highly motivated individual to support the research and data components of its programs and advocacy work. The analyst works as part of the Research Team, under the direction of the Vice President and Senior Policy Analysts.

TCS focuses its investigations and educational efforts on, 1) the need to eliminate wasteful spending, corporate welfare and harmful subsidies, 2) responsible federal budgeting that reflects the nation’s priorities, and 3) the need for federal management of resources and assets that preserves their value, ensures a fair return from any private interest use, and avoids future taxpayer liabilities. TCS researches and tracks Congressional action on a variety of specific national security, energy, agriculture, transportation, disaster, and resources issues. TCS is well-known for analytical products, detailed analysis of legislation, comprehensive catalogues of subsidies and earmarks, and work with allies across the ideological spectrum.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research for fact sheets, white papers, reports, and other educational products.
  • Work with program staff to draft, edit, and post regular content for the TCS website and social media.
  • Monitor hearings, legislation, oversight reports, and other government action on relevant issues.
  • Assist with and manage materials production and logistics for special projects, including public presentations, and press events.
  • Partner with program staff on data identification, collection, aggregation, and organization.
  • Research and analyze data for patterns and trends to be included in program materials and assist in data visualization for social media and website content.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in experience with experience in budget, economics, statistics.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated quantitative and analytical research skills with strict attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comfort working under tight deadlines; willingness to commit long hours when necessary to accomplish a task on deadline.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize a multi-project workload.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Access; experience with web content management, relational database management, data modeling, and VBA, SQL, or HTML coding helpful, but not required.

This position will be located in a small and fast-paced Capitol Hill office and will have a hybrid schedule and regular contact with other staff. This requires a self-motivated and detail-oriented person with excellent organizational skills. Candidates must have exemplary research and writing skills and an ability to synthesize complicated material into accurate, accessible information for the general public. Successful candidates will show discretion, good humor, and strong judgment, and a commitment to TCS’ nonpartisan mission.
