About this role:

Wells Fargo is seeking an Assistant General Counsel, Executive Director on our Public, Regulatory and Corporate Affairs Legal team to provide legal support on a broad range of issues focused on aspects of sustainability.

This role will be in the Public Affairs section, which supports Public Affairs, including Sustainability, Communications, Government Relations & Public Policy, Brand & Marketing and Philanthropy & Community Impact. While this role may be asked to also support other aspects of Public Affairs, a primary focus of the position will be sustainability. You will focus on providing legal coverage for the Company's sustainability strategy, and advising on the related laws, regulations impacting the Company. From a sustainability perspective, Wells Fargo is evolving to meet environmental and social challenges, finding opportunities for meaningful impact, and continuing to support the financial needs of our customers.

In this role, you will:
  • Issue-spot, research, appropriately escalate and help to resolve risks and concerns related to sustainability and applicable laws and regulations, including laws related to greenwashing, climate disclosures, and human rights.
  • Advise more experienced leadership to develop or influence objectives, plans, specifications, resources, and long-term goals for highly complex business and needs
  • Handle matters that have a significant impact on the Company's operations, strategies, or profitability
  • Provide legal advice on matters for management of the Corporation and its subsidiaries
  • Serve as a legal advisor to the businesses within Wells Fargo
  • Lead the strategy and resolution of highly complex and unique challenges across multiple areas or the enterprise, delivering solutions that are long-term, large-scale and require vision, creativity, innovation, advanced analytical and inductive thinking, and coordination of highly complex activities and guidance to others
  • Review and analyze complex large scale or long-term challenges that require in-depth evaluation of multiple factors including intangibles or unprecedented factors
  • Provide vision, direction, and expertise to more experienced leadership on implementing innovative and significant business solutions that are large in scale or companywide strategies
  • Develop and lead implementation of strategic business initiatives, and lead work team to meet deliverables and drive new initiatives
  • Provide substantive legal advice on matters for more experienced management of the Corporation
  • Educate, train, and supervise less experienced attorneys within the Legal Department
  • Collaborate with and influence all levels of professionals, including more experienced managers
  • Oversee and take an active role in the education and training of a team of attorneys
  • Engage and influence stakeholders, internal partners, and peers associated with the function or affected by its outcomes
Required Qualifications:
  • 7+ years of Law experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
  • Active State Bar membership or the equivalent in a country outside the United States
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience providing legal counsel on sustainability matters (including climate and/or human rights related), including a deep understanding of relevant legal authorities and their application to financial institutions.
  • Familiarity with enterprise risk management frameworks and functions and regulatory expectations for risk management at large banks and financial holding companies
  • Ability to analyze legal issues in substantive law in area of practice and provide effective advice to clients on complex legal matters.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Effective organizational, multi-tasking, and prioritizing skills
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy skills
  • Ability to take an active role in the education, mentoring and training of less experienced team members.
