BSA is a non-profit organization in DC that concentrates its efforts on empowering Black youth through Civic Leadership and Engagement. We are committed to creating a pipeline of Black youth leaders who are committed to improving self, as well as their communities. We have a proven track record of raising awareness around social issues disproportionately harming Black youth and advocating for the elimination of structural and institutional barriers such as inequitable school funding, punitive school discipline policies and practices and police in schools, as well as insufficient student mental health staffing. The work we do is directed by BSA’s middle and high school youth members and a growing base of young people and adult allies that learn, unlearn ,gain skills and practice them to move issue-based campaigns forward. 


Job Description

We are seeking a Youth & Community Outreach Coordinator who is deeply connected to the D.C community, committed to racial equity, youth leadership and systemic change. The outreach coordinator will be a key part of the Advocacy & Organizing team. They will play a role in recruiting and retaining Black Swan youth members and hold the extended base of youth activist & adult allies., coordinate efforts to engage system involved youth and lead list building, and community outreach efforts. This is a full-time position. 

Job Responsibilities 

Youth Outreach & Engagement 

  • Supporting Civic Leadership and Engagement Program team in recruiting and retaining middle and high school youth leaders. 
  •  Facilitate interactive workshops for young people and adults not yet connected to BSA, to introduce them to the work and gain skills in organizing, advocacy and racial equity 
  • Recruit and retain youth activists and bring them into the work through relationship building, coordinating routine update meetings, bringing them into community outreach & engagement efforts and skill-building opportunities 

Base-Building & Community Outreach 

  • Compile, maintain and grow organization’s lists and community partnerships 
  • Conduct training internally as needed (ie. base building and outreach)
  • Collect metrics around youth and adult engagement through membership process, meetings, events, etc
  • Support the promotion of meetings, events and other opportunities to base 
  • Lead the implementation of base building strategies including among others tabling, targeted individual outreach and engagement 
  • Support the planning and implementation of youth-led community events 
  • Recruit and retain adult allies, bring them into the work through relationship building, coordinating routine update meetings, and getting them involved in supporting advocacy and community outreach efforts
  • Lead planning of community outreach efforts, including street teams, aimed at sharing information, promoting the work, and growing our base of youth and adult allies 
  • Regularly evaluate the success of outreach efforts and make adjustments accordingly. This includes setting benchmarks/ targets and noting successes and where improvements might be needed. 

Administration 

● Attend team meetings 

● Bi-monthly & quarterly staff trainings


Qualifications

●2-5 years of experience in street and/or community outreach efforts;

● 2-5 years of experience working with youth; 

● 1-3 years of experience facilitating trainings or workshops; 

● At least one year experience supporting advocacy and organizing efforts 

● Experience working with system involved youth 

● Demonstrate commitment to youth leadership, racial equity and systemic change; 

● Experience working with or living in D.C (or having meaningful relationships with community) 

● Comfortable using social media to promote our work 

● We strongly encourage BIPOC to apply
